Exploring the richness of a genre that captures the true breadth of rhythms and narratives, Whatever This Is meld science fiction within unique musical compositions
Reading, PA — March 26 th , 2022 – Traditional Black Metal and Progressive music is one that has been tried and tested by many rising acts, but few are able to make their mark in the unique and distinct musical genre. One such work of art is the eclectic band from Reading, Pennsylvania, called Whatever This Is- a collective of artists who continue to inspire and stun listeners with their prowess.
With the release of their exciting debut EP, Whatever This Is showcase a memorable and soul-stirring mix of instrumentation, contrasted by an empowering and stirring vocal spirit. Consisting of 5 songs, the new EP, intriguingly titled “Intergalactic Panty Dropper”, offers a humorous take on the genre, rooted within Sci-fi lyricism and narratives.
The new EP highlights the musical talents of the band’s guitarists Chuck Lazarz and Danny Pool, complemented by Marc Merwin on Bass, Leo Carrero on Drums and Brad Miller captivating listeners with his vocals. With tracks such as “Legion”, “The Upside Down”, “Sunshine”, and “LV-426”, the debut release takes listeners on a journey through a completely different dimension- a product of the band’s creative mind.
“Intergalactic Panty Dropper” was released for listeners on New Year’s Eve and was accompanied by a livestream performance of the entire album on the band’s Facebook live. All tracks featured on the album are rooted within science fiction movies and television shows, making for a scintillating listening experience for fans of science fiction.
A striking element within the new track is Whatever This Is’ stunning display of four-part vocal harmonies- something that remains a rare find within the music world and sets the artists apart from other rising acts in the genre. By breaking away from redundant themes of being angry, the government, or even Satan, the dynamic band explores a new tangent to the genre, standing out amidst other rising acts.
“As a bunch of nerds, it felt more natural and organic to write songs about sci-fi because we identify more with these stories and it’s easier to form a bridge with fans because we don’t discuss polarizing subject matters,” say the artists regarding their musical focus.
Featuring artwork by Alexis Rivera of Playful Gorilla, the new release was dropped for listeners on December 31st, 2020, and is accompanied by a Limited Edition Multi-Colored Vinyl EP – strictly limited to 100 Copies worldwide.

From the ashes of Divination, a long-standing traditional Death Metal band, rises- its name: Whatever This Is. The group was formed with a desire to do something different than what had been done in the past. No confines other than the group’s own creativity. With songs combining multiple genre elements, it only seemed fitting for the artists to name the band as ‘Whatever This Is’. The eclectic band writes songs about science fiction elements and focus on a more fun way to tell stories.
The group recently self-recorded, produced and released their debut EP in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The group’s new album is available on most major streaming platforms and on vinyl and CD from the band directly through Bandcamp.
