Jacksonville, Florida — October 15, 2018 — Hearing is believing when listening to Phil Swindle’s transformative new release Art Of Soul on Synesthesia Records. Art Of Soul features 10 completely original songs written by Phil with one collaborative blues milestone “Last Call” co-written by drummer Derek Hess. This LP features Jimmy Hall on vocals, harmonica, and tenor saxophone, with a full Muscle Shoals-flavored horn section, percussion, and gospel-infused backing vocals. Production on this album truly pays homage to artists like Leon Russell, Delaney and Bonnie, and Freddie King.
Phil Swindle and Jimmy Hall are native Alabama boys, kindred spirits, fully committed to interpreting Southern soul, which is the driving force behind this record. These tunes beautifully capture the genius and essence of Jimmy Hall, who just wrapped his 2018 UK and US tour, fronting vocals for Jeff Beck. His voice has never sounded better and it’s perfectly complimented by Phil’s electric, acoustic, and slide guitar swagger.
Bassists Timmy Lindsey and Tommy Gilstrap provide subsonic reinforcement with powerful bass lines that propel the rhythm section into an exciting new territory. Drummer/percussionist, Derek Hess, injects fresh compelling grooves that simply work. Swindle says of the project “Art Of Soul represents a 3-year commitment to making an excellent and timeless musical statement. This band delivers! These songs struck a deep chord in my heart that I hope continues to resonate in yours.”
The album cover features an art deco image of a naked lady from the 1920’s, but it’s actually a photograph of the gold medallion bradded to the headstock of Phil’s 1933 National Duolian Resonator guitar that was used on “Wave”, “We All Need Something”, and the solo instrumental “Dopyera” from the record.
Art Of Soul renders interesting provocative melody lines and haunting harmonies that will keep you wanting more. The lyrics are personal and convey a host of emotions from wrenching to inspirational.
