Beck’s music is his journal – he writes about his existence, his thoughts, sometimes he tells a story. His music explores everything from childhood joy, teen angst, relationships both working and broken, life and world events.

“Don’t expect any flat facsimiles of The Rat Pack, Perry Como and Harry Belafonte…. rarely accused of sounding like another artist, Beck’s songs are definitely coated with recognizable influences,” said Adam Joseph in a 2015 Monterey County Weekly review. The youngest of four siblings, Dan Beck came close to being named Ludwig because he decided to arrive in the middle of a concert his parents were attending – perhaps to hear the music better!

His favorite and most influential guitarists include Hendrix for his genuineness and emotional honesty, Wes Montgomery & Kenny Burrell for their sense of melody and phrasing in their improvisations. Jon Mark's finger picking style blues as found on some of John Mayall's albums and Bucky Pizzarelli's improvisation using strictly fast moving chords were also big influences.  There are way too many other guitarists to mention everybody, but Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana, Alvin Lee, Terry Kath, Mike Bloomfield, BB King, John McLaughlin, and Jesse Colin Young are some.

On his current album, the title song All The Fish Are Hoppin' was the first song the original band ever recorded. It was inspired by some homeless folks who by listening and watching through the fence seemed like they were barred from the restaurant patio gig the band was playing – perhaps imagining themselves inside. “I see lots of lives I don't envy; I ache to see a world where everyone is living his/her own wonderful life,” shares Beck wistfully.

The first handful of chords of In The Night were pulled from a musical dream – the song maintains that dreaminess, beautifully orchestrated by the band, and illustrates the influence that day to day life – and even dreams – has on Dan Beck’s music

Jahbluzion Confusion was written for all those folks who ask for a description of Beck’s music either right before listening or even right after and is a perfect example of the Blue Jazz genre – a genre invented by Beck – that the song describes.
