Matt Brown is a soul musician from West Palm Beach, FL. His father being a jazz pianist and church organist is what led him to picking up as many instruments as he could from an early age. At the age of 11, his father got him a bass guitar and he taught himself how to play so that he could be a contributing member of the church band that consisted of his father, brother, aunt and younger cousin. Matt went on to study music at Palm Beach Atlantic University. PBA is where he found his passion to pursue a career in music full time.
In 2012, Matt joined Making Faces, a rock, reggae and funk band from West Palm Beach. He is the bassist and one of the lead vocalists in the group. They’ve had opportunities to share the same stage and/or be the opening act for The Offspring, BareNaked Ladies, The Original Wailers, Fortunate Youth, Soul Asylum, Less Than Jake, 10th Avenue North, Slightly Stoopid, Tribal Seeds, Ballyhoo, Dirty Heads, Jimmy Needham, Passafire, Stick Figure, the Heavy Pets, Reel Big Fish and many more. Aside from representing the USA on a tour in the Hunan Region in China, they have also played the tailgate stage pregame show for the Miami Dolphins, Sunfest, Vans Warped Tour, Florida Music Festival and many more notable shows.
In 2017, Matt started writing original music for his solo project. He released his first single ‘Mona Lisa’ in January of 2018. The song rightfully features his father on piano. From there, Matt has continued to write, record, produce and release new music that can be found on all streaming platforms. He has worked with Drew Dockerill of Many Moons and Wait for Green, Sophie Marks, Lupe Fuentes, DJ Remy and many more. His creative process is fueled by his full time job as a musician. In August of 2018, Matt formed the band, Mood Swing. Mood Swing is a soulful trio in which Matt plays bass and keys and is accompanied by Dakota Dawkins on guitar and Evan Whitney on drums. The trio has taken part in shows with Electric Kif, JM & The Sweets, The Savants of Soul, Sticky Fingers, The Lumineers, Scott Yoder and many more. They have played shows at notable venues such as The Hippodrome in Gainesville, Voltaire in West Palm Beach, Crazy Uncle Mike’s in Boca Raton and Funk & Flow Studio in Ft. Lauderdale.
When Matt isn’t playing with a band, he is using his looper to make himself sound like a full band. Being fluent in different instruments, he plays bass, piano and percussion [on the bass] while adding vocals to complete the sound. He plays originals, a variety of popular covers, the favorite classics and takes requests. He has opened or shared the stage with Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio, Royce Lovett, Shevonne, Hannah Jae, Josh Miles and much more. He is also a founder of the artist collective known as SoulFam and the resident emcee for the Ft. Lauderdale chapter of Sofar Sounds, a global music community.
