Is skydiving without a parachute still skydiving? Is a band without mates still a band? Musical daredevil Dan Markosian affirmatively answers the latter question with his alter-ego Motor Ballet. His music? Imagine contemporary Broadway (without the jazz hands) meeting alternative rock, texturally advance sounds originally inspired by neoclassical composers Bartok and Stravinsky, a style that over time has morphed into one completely his own.

Harmonically sophisticated in an approachable way, Motor Ballet’s music has found its way to and SoundCloud. Most notable is the fact that he was commissioned to provide instrumental music to several modern dance companies. The most prestigious being Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, who have performed his collaborations worldwide.

One of the things that stands out about Motor Ballet is how his quirk and sense of humor shine through his work. “This Story” for example is told from the perspective of a person getting their welcome tour to Hell and getting the impression that despite what they’ve been told their whole life – it’s not that bad. Then there is “In the Event” which would fit nicely in a Tim Burton film starring who else but Johnny Depp. While his songs bring about a bit of eccentric comical hues, they are far from niche novelties.

With enough material to release an album, Motor Ballet is busy building a wider fan base getting his music out to as many willing listeners as possible. In the meantime, he continues to compose and record in the studio.

Lyric Sheet

In the event they find me in a field
Disoriented wondering what is real
Don’t be alarmed it happens all the time
It’s my favorite state of mind

Left hand reminds me of when
It’s time to breath
Right hand appears to ascend
Above the small things I believe

In the event I’m floating out to sea
Time to admit you’ve seen the last of me
You should consider cashing in your doubt
This is what I’m all about

Left foot is covered in blood
It hurts like hell
Right foot pulls out of the mud
My tracks a story they do tell

Memory is not history
You may be certain or unsure
History is your memory
Don’t trust the past or the future

In the event I’m pitching a fuss
I’m missing the bus
I’m liable to cuss
In the event I’m no longer a gent
I said what I meant
I was forced to repent

Memory is not history
You may be certain and unsure
History is your memory
Don’t trust the past or the future

In the event I’m thrown from the show
I’ve lost all I know
The wheel’s turning slow
In the event I’m late on my rent
My money is spent
The turning wheel is bent

In the event I become the event
In the event I am in the event
I am the event
