Tell us about yourself and your music

Galleon is an Atlanta-based musical group which firmly believes life is much too short to settle for ordinary music. Comprised of Elliott & June Michaels, William Easterling, Mike Shea, Martin Alvarez, and John Patka, this electric outfit plays a variety of rock, folk-rock, and modern country music; blending tastefully melodic, well-crafted original songs with choice deep-cut cover tunes, and performing it all with a very high level of professionalism and their own unique and special style. Thus, the band makes music that sails above and beyond all the rest!

Galleon’s music is a fusion of the best elements of jazz, country, blues, gospel, folk, and African and Latin musical styles – the very same elements which were fused together to forge rock music in the first place. So it’s still rock & roll to Galleon!

Galleon founder and skipper ELLIOTT MICHAELS (guitar, lead vocals, songwriting) is a seasoned veteran of the music scenes in New York, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. The Brooklyn-born Michaels founded Galleon in 1994 shortly after moving to Atlanta and has been maintaining and improving it ever since. Michaels’ impeccable vocal styling and right-on-the-mark songwriting are the foundation on which was built the Galleon! As for his guitar work, well … Elliott’s a terrific singer and don’t you forget it!

Galleon also features WILLIAM EASTERLING (polyphonic synthesizer, organ, digital piano, harmony vocals, songwriting), a classically-trained musician with an eclectic pop sensibility; MIKE SHEA (kit drums, percussion), a sensational musician whose fierce but tasteful attack belies his mild-mannered behavior; MARTIN ALVAREZ (lead & bass guitar), a talented Florida transplant with plenty of tropical heat and a deep fondness for K*I*S*S; JOHN PATKA (lead & bass guitar, harmony vocals), a well-seasoned rocker and devoted family man with vast and varied influences; and Elliott’s lovely wife JUNE ELISE MICHAELS (weapons of hand percussion, background vocals, lyrics), a long-time new music devotee with lots of get-up-and-go. The spirit, enthusiasm, and professionalism of these musicians helps ensure smooth sailing for Galleon!

The chemistry and camaraderie among musical partners Patka, Alvarez, Shea, Easterling, and Mr. & Mrs. Michaels is most evident in Galleon’s cohesive and assertive sound, imposing stage presence, and commanding performance. The group has appeared often at Atlanta-area nightclubs and concert events, and they look forward to growing and progressing as they play their special brand of music throughout the Southeastern United States in the coming months as soon as the current virus crisis is over.

Our current release, entitled Introducing GALLEON … Atlanta’s Unknown Supergroup!, contains recordings of about a dozen of our original songs. Although these recordings were made from live performances and band practices, we believe this album represents GALLEON at its finest. It gives the listener a chance to witness the development of a great Georgia band.

What inspired you to write this release?

The songs on this album have been in the works for a long time. They come from a variety of different writers and musicians, including several members of GALLEON itself. The music is a mix of rock, folk-rock and modern country, with emphasis on strong melodies, interesting chord patterns, and meaningful, substantial lyrics which go beyond the scope of much of today’s music.

Describe the writing and recording process

As mentioned previously, these songs were recorded from live GALLEON performances and from band practices. This recording technique gives the listener a better idea of how we sound without a lot of recording gimmicks.

Any plans to hit the road?

GALLEON hopes to get back out in the clubs as soon as the current virus crisis is over, with the intent of playing in and around Atlanta and throughout the Southeastern United States.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

We like to think our music does stand out from the rest in terms of the quality of our material and the quality of our musicianship. We stress melody, chord structure, and lyrical excellence in our songs. We stress doing what makes the songs sound their best when we sing and play them as a unit.

Who have you been listening to lately?

Our musical tastes range from hard rock to folk rock to pop to modern country.

Who are your biggest influences?

Blake Shelton meets Black Sabbath! Barry Manilow meets Robin Trower! Human Drama meets the Human League and the Human Beinz! The Pussycat Dolls meet Faster Pussycat and the Love Dolls (not to mention Doll Congress)! The Captain & Tennille meet Captain Beyond! The Yellow Balloons meet Led Zeppelin! Michael Anthony meets Anthony Newley! George Jones meets George Lynch! Georgia music meets a Brooklyn attitude!

Tell us about your passions

We want to be successful as musicians, both as a band and individually. We are Atlanta’s unknown supergroup, the best-kept secret in Georgia music today, and we intend to go public in a big way!

What else is happening next in your world?

As mentioned above, as soon as the virus crisis has blown out to sea we hope to get back out in the clubs in and around Atlanta and throughout the Southeast.
