Songs and Dreams

Tell us about yourself and your music

Young Mr. Howard is my name… aka Jeremy Howard. Music has been flowing through my entire life. I grew up in a family of musicians. We played classical music, polkas, pop music, etc. We even had a barbershop quartet. We also had a string quartet. I started listening to electronic music and doing tape experiments when I was quite young. My oldest brother accused me of destroying his boom box with these experiments. I denied it, but he was quite right.

Now I’m a violist/singer-songwriter / experimental electronic composer. Sometimes I combine these elements. Sometimes I keep them separated.

Talk to us more about your latest release

My newest release is Substance 2019, volume 2. It is an E.P. featuring remixed classical music I composed, dubbed-out beats, and vocal samples of my beautiful friend talking about a dream she had about her and Post Malone. At times the music will make your head dance. At other times your mind will be twisted into a nightmare of dark ambient only to be lifted into the ether.

What inspired you to write this release?

This release has many inspirations: the power of dreams, of death, of hope and resurrection.

Describe the writing and recording process

I compose in many different ways. Some aspects of this release I composed in the good old fashioned way- putting notes to paper with a pencil. That was the starting point for this music. However, I’m constantly using my iPad and computer to experiment with music, “noise”, and beats. Most of this music came out of those experiments. This music is not experimental for the sake of being experimental. It exists because of experiments- constant experiments.

Sometimes songs come to me in dreams, but in this case, much of this came from someone else’s dream.

Any plans to release a video?

Any plans to hit the road?

I don’t have plans to hit the road… but, I do give private concerts via zoom, etc.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

I’m not a cow. I’m not interested in being branded. I don’t think cows are very interested in such a thing either. Some people are into it though.

Who have you been listening to lately?

I’ve been binging on Pet Shop Boys, Radiohead, Max Richter, and K. Penderecki… But I’ve been listening to quite a bit of my boy,  Maluma and my girl, Taylor Swift. Why haven’t they collaborated yet!? I love Folklore. I love Aphex Twin. I love the old TS/AT mashups- pure genius… mostly. I could go on.

Who are your biggest influences?

This is tough… I’d say my musical family life previously mentioned… But I’d have to list New Order, They Might Be Giants, Johnny Cash, John Cage, John Zorn, Philip Glass, K. Penderecki, The Art of Noise, The Orb, Aphex Twin…

Tell us about your passions

I think sleep, music-making, and Bible study are my biggest passions.

What else is happening next in your world?

I’m waiting for the borders to open up. I’m in Panama and can’t leave. When the borders open up I want to see my good friend Emily who can be heard talking about her dream in my newest release. I want to travel to Arizona, Montana, Nova Scotia, somewhere in India. Who knows… Maybe I’ll just stay here.

Thanks for an awesome interview, Young Mr. Howard
