Tell us about yourself and your music
Hello, my name is Michael Paul. I’ve been performing for over 20 years as a songwriter. My music genre is “acoustic rock therapy”. Lately, I’ve been playing with my 3 piece band “Michael Paul Trio (MP3)”. My home burned in the Santiam Canyon fires of 2020 and I’m currently staying with my percussionist who happens to be my girlfriend. Life is good in Oregon
Talk to us more about your latest release
It’s been a while since I recorded music but I’m hoping to get back in the studio soon. My latest release was a song titled “wrong”. I wrote it as an all grown up protest to my 6th-grade teacher and anyone else who thought I was going to turn out to be a trouble maker, a loser, or a fool. My parents were my biggest fans. Both passed away after seeing me achieve a full-time music career. They’re support made the difference for me and I’ll continue singing and strumming until I die (most likely at a young age)
What inspired you to write this release?
Observing grown-ups in a Christian cult as a young person is something that causes the young mind to develop a strong criticism of adulthood. I saw some of my teachers and other adults as foolish children in grown-up bodies. One, in particular, was Marlin Newlin (who’s son spit in my face and got always with it for one example) was a terrible problem for me. He would humiliate me in front of the class and constantly blame me for every bit of talking or messing around. I wrote “wrong” in retrospect because then, I wasn’t sure, but now I know he was wrong about me
Describe the writing and recording process
I write songs differently these days. They used to come at once but now they’re very slow and cone to me in pieces. The recording is fun for me and I think I enjoy tracking live the most even tho I haven’t done that much
Any plans to hit the road?
I’ve gone on a few independent tours as a solo artist and I hope to do that again in the near future
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
Acoustic Rock Therapy! I play in assisted living facilities as well as the typical venues, but I’m always healing myself and others with music
Who have you been listening to lately?
My music doesn’t sound like a lot of the music I listen to but: Buckethead, Justin Timberlake, and A Perfect Circle have been getting a lot of play lately. Pink Floyd is always on in my head
Who are your biggest influences?
Dave Matthews has influenced my guitar playing for sure
