Making it Happen with Johnny Rock

Tell us about yourself and your music

Hello, my name is Tate Sanderson aka. Johnny Rock. When I was 3 years old my parents signed me up for piano lessons so they could put the piano to use that we inherited from my late great grandmother. I had a good ear and could pick it up quickly. Years later I received a beautiful candy-apple red Gretsch hollow-body guitar as a gift and I started to rock. The day I graduated high school I left for Hollywood. A rollercoaster ride of bands, pizza, and record deal proposals, It was time to tour the USA.. then playing with (Sony Rockworld records) group Dirty Looks with a video out on Headbangers Ball MTV…I wrote a book about all the wild times coming up, “Johnny Rock Tales from the Road” and now preparing for a new tour to support our Album just released/dropped “Holiday Rockin” with Johnny Rock

Talk to us more about your latest release

The new album “Holiday Rockin” was inspired by good times with family and friends. Including songs for many fun occasions like Halloween, Christmas, New Years, 4th of July, etc. we even have a birthday song for you. The sound of the album is mixed with blues, ska, rock, and a little old school heavy metal, all fine-tuned with that surfy beach party sound of the Johnny Rock Band. So please add some of our new tunes to your personal playlist, put your dancing shoes on and get your party rocking.

What inspired you to write this release?

This single came from pure spontaneous combustion, during this pandemic era the American Legion post across the street from my recording studio decided to set up a Hotdog on a Stick stand in the parking lot. I was in working on a new song when I noticed an audience around my front porch, a line waiting for corn dogs and lemonade. I dragged an amp out and took advantage of the situation. While I was singing and jamming I started to improvise as I often do. I made up a little tune about the tasty fried foods and the people eating them. The commander from the American Legion came over and said, “we all love that song you should record it”. So I did, and I made a video for youtube that is getting a lot of attention.

Describe the writing and recording process

For recording, I take my rough improvised song into my studio and lay down some tracks with my drummer Brian Fowler. Next, I will add a bass line and keep changing it until I think it sounds golden. Throwdown rhythm guitar and start piecing the lyrics together so they fit into the groove and still make sense. it’s time to stack the vocals for the chorus and some backing hooks to go with the lead vocal. Then my favorite part shredding out some tasty guitar licks for the finishing touch.

Any plans to release a video?

Any plans to hit the road?

We are booking a small tour as Johnny rock and the Dragon, me, and my rhythm player at venues between California and Florida. We don’t know the dates yet still having booking complications because of Covid 19 but we will live stream shows and record the highlights of the tour.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

We print up, give away and sell tons of stickers, buttons, t-shirts, etc… with our logos as well as social marketing, recording new music, making videos, and telling our story to everybody that will listen. Look for us on all social media.

Who have you been listening to lately?

Beebs Money is my neighbor and has an amazing voice and her band members include Norwood (Bass) and Jon (drums) from Fishbone and Jay (guitar) from Slightly Stoopid. We are also writing a song together currently about the people in the world trying to get along.

Who are your biggest influences?

Jimi Hendrix has always influenced me by the way he can make loud obnoxious noise and turn it into beautiful music and he was quite a poet his words always impacted a huge amount of understanding, meaning and still make sense today. I am a big fan of guitar-driven music and the classic guitarists like Jeff Beck, Robin Trower, Carlos Santana, Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Paige, Ritchie Blackmore… way too many to mention them all.

Tell us about your passions

My whole life is about music. I love creating new things and teaching the younger members of my family how to play instruments and sing together around the beach fire. I want to learn how to play every instrument at least a little. I love food and trying new flavors of different treats around the world.

What else is happening next in your world?

I hope everybody fares well in this pandemic era and is ready when things open up a bit more to come out and enjoy some rock and roll with Johnny Rock because we are working on new surprises for you… some new band members, new logo t-shirts, new songs and other secrets we can’t yet reveal, so do what you got to do and we will be back better than ever…ALRIGHT!!!

Thanks for an awesome interview, Johnny Rock Band
