Ladies and Gentlemen…Tha MuthafunkaholX

Tell us about yourself and your music

The MuthaFunkaholX are and eclectic, socially conscious band that plays funk, rock, and soul music. The brainchild of Ebon Soul and Jesse Wales, this professional touring band has entertained people with original music for many years. They have opened for iconic bands like PFunk, Gil Scott Heron, and many others numerous times over the years, and boasts a nation of seasoned musicians. Former and current members have included honorary member ‘StarChild’ Gary Shider of PFunk, as well as PFunk All-Stars Guy Curtis, Andre Giles, Scott Taylor, and Benny ‘Black Ceaser’ Cowan (current PFunk drummer). Solo recording artitst ‘The Duchess’ Niela, Russell Hayward, as well as Powerman 5000’s Adam Williams are also past and present members. After the death of guitarist Dale Conner and drummer Lamont Jones, the band regrouped, built NowChild Studios and Soundstage in Baltimore, and recorded a number of albums. As a new and upgraded band, Tha MuthafunkaholX currently plays clubs and festivals and continues to collaborate with great musicians to make music that funks your body, and rocks your soul. Talk to us more about your latest release

The MuthafunkaholX is about to release a about three new albums worth of material. One in called ‘Take A Knee’, and will be available soon on CDBaby. Another is a reboot of some old material and the third album will be a reintroduction to the band with some more new material.

What inspired you to write this release?

The band has always been socially conscious and feel that talking about dancing, having sex and getting high is limiting. With all that is going on in the world the band likes to reflect all the social and political movements at play today.

Describe the writing and recording process

Often ideas come spontaneously and almost fully formed in the mind. We then just put it down on ‘tape’. The more we then play the idea, the more it comes into focus. Often songs are inspired by some current event…

Any plans to hit the road?

We usually play locally in the DelMarVa area. Keep an eye out for band performances in the future.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

Our music has been and is very eclectic. Though we brand ourselves as funk-rock-soul, we really draw our influences from many different artists and styles.

Who are your biggest influences?

Prince, PFunk, James Brown, EW&F, Fishbone, Led Zep, and many more…

What else is happening next in your world?

We continue to write and record music.

Thanks for an awesome interview, Ebon Soul
