Tell us about yourself and your music
I’m from a very small town (Hondo, TX). I love to joke around but I am also very blunt and sarcastic. I feel that my music is pretty much based off of growing up in a small town. Growing up in a small town, you tend to use your imagination more since there’s nothing else to do. I would constantly just watch horror movies and draw which I feel helped inspire the whole “Damius” character.
Talk to us more about your latest release
This was very challenging as I would study what people liked and what people didn’t like. Such as, some people liked very short songs, some liked stories. Some only cared for the flow and some only cared for the beat. I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried to listen and study to other artists and see what made people love them so much. I did that with different genres and would try to find something that I feel could help bring into this dark underground style.
What inspired you to write this release?
I wanted to try and bring something different to music. I wanted a dark melodic album but with great beats that I feel could even be used by mainstream artists. I wanted this album to be in limbo and give people different reactions and not know what to feel. Basically I wanted this ep to be too “mainstream” for the underground fans but also too “dark and scary” for mainstream fans.
Describe the writing and recording process
The writing process was very experimental. I wanted to try to switch it up from my previous EP “727” by having different flows and catchier hooks. Plus I was able to work with some artists I grew up listening to which was a great experience. The recording process was pretty interesting. Battling back and forth with ideas on how to switch it up and make it sound more like a “Damius” song but in a semi mainstream type of fashion.
Any plans to release a video?
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
For the “413” EP I actually did something I’ve never seen done before. I allowed my fans to pick the album cover art and the date the EP got released. I’ve actually never seen that done, it may have been done before but I’ve never seen it done and I thought from a fans perspective, this was a way to get the fans involved and let them be a part of this and I thought that was pretty unique.
Who have you been listening to lately?
I’ve been listening to Slipknot, Eminem and Tech N9ne a lot lately. I really enjoy how they’re all not scared to change their sound and do whatever they want with their music and still make it sound amazing.
