Tell us about yourself and your music
My name is Matzer. I’m a singer/songwriter, producer, and rapper from New York City. I have so many different styles of music. I can give you a pop ballad one minute, a dance track in the next, an urban rap feel after that, and I can even hit you with some country. I’ve been doing music since I was 5 and music will always be a huge part of my life.
Talk to us more about your latest release
My newest release is actually going to be available on all major platforms on January 24th, 2020. The song is titled “Without You” and I’m super excited about it! I found myself driving home one day and listening back to all of my old songs. When “Without You” came on I remember being so blown away by how far I’ve come as a songwriter, as a producer, as a creator and I’ve taken such a different road with my music and I’m super proud of it. I am extremely excited for everyone to finally hear it!
What inspired you to write this release?
Heartbreak is a huge inspiration for me and this song is full of it. It’s about giving your all and losing everything in return. It’s about believing the person you fell in love with is one person and being completely disappointed with the outcome. But as upset as we are with the people that hurt us, this song is also about still caring for that person and not being able to let go.
Describe the writing and recording process
Writing the song was the easy part. I believe that if you can write a song in 5-10 minutes and not have to think about it, then that’s the one. The song pretty much wrote itself as soon as I began playing the guitar riff. Funny story is, the song was actually supposed to be an acoustic song. I didn’t plan on it being a rap at all, I had completely different verses written out. When I went into the studio to record it, as I was laying out the tracks I felt like there was something missing. I ended up switching the drums and that’s when it hit me. I erased the verses I had and the new verses began flowing but as a rap this time. When creativity hits you, you don’t question things like that. So by the time the record was done, I created it but I was blown away myself about how it came out and how it evolved into something greater then I had even expected.
Any plans to release a video?
Any plans to hit the road?
I do plan on touring in the future, but right now I’m really focusing on getting this new album out. I want my fans to hear and really experience the artist I’ve evolved into these past few years.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
I never try to complete with Artists out here. I believe what fans like is your individuality in your music and in your personality. I don’t try to keep up with the new music trends, I just create whatever my heart desires at that moment. If you try to live up to the expectations of everyone else, then your music will never be original. You’ll always be the next Justin Bieber or Taylor Swift when the goal is to be the next YOU. And I personally want to be the one and only Matzer.
Who have you been listening to lately?
I listen to a lot of everything but lately, I have been listening to a lot of Seeb, JC Stewart, and Nightly. I’ll listen to anything really. If I can hear a song and it has the ability to take me to a different place whether it be with its lyrics or the beat, then that song will be on repeat for a long time.
Who are your biggest influences?
My biggest influence is actually Green Day. They were the first band I ever listened to. I heard their American Idiot album for the first time and I was blown away. They have that ability to go 100% punk rock on you but also hit you with a softer pop side of them. I really admire the fact that they have that “Do whatever YOU want to do and forget about what everyone else thinks” attitude and it’s something I really lived by with my music.
Tell us about your passions
I have a huge passion for helping people. I always made it my goal to be there for people whether it be with my music or in my career today.
What else is happening next in your world?
I’m currently an EMT for the New York City Fire Department and it is the most rewarding thing I have ever done. For once in my life, I get to live out my dream of helping people. I can help people with my music, but I can also be somebody’s last hope when they call 911. I give everything I do 150% whether it’s music or my job and to be able to do both is an absolute blessing and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
