Tell us about yourself and your music
YnotB is a musician and artist working primarily in the fields of electronic music, fractal art and oil painting. After some decades as a guitarist and saxophonist in various bands performing pop, rock, jump jive and jazz music, he began experimenting with self-composed, produced, recorded, mixed and mastered electronic music. Whilst undeniably influenced by the likes of Brian Eno, Daevid Allen, Tim Blake, David Byrne, Tangerine Dream, Pink Floyd, Steve Hillage, Massive Attack, Lynton Kwesi Johnson, Radiohead and the Stranglers, he strives to produce music that is original – often melodic and yet still atmospheric, edgy and unique. This is mirrored in his artwork that at times juxtaposes chaos and form, featuring strong colours and highlighting his fascination with the effects of light.
Talk to us more about your latest release
My latest release is a track on the Ambient Online 8 compilation album called “56”. It’s an atmospheric, downtempo piano piece that I’m quite proud of.
What inspired you to write this release?
I wrote it on my birthday, which is always on a chilly day in February. I wanted to spend that time doing something creative. I woke up with the idea for the track playing in my head, so I went downstairs to my studio and recorded it that morning.
Any plans to release a video?
Yeah, a video for this track is in production. It’ll be another psychedelic effects thing. I have a few videos on my YouTube channel.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’m playing a benefit gig for refugees on August 19th in Barnstedt, Niedersachsen, Germany. It’s a rare live performance. I’ll be on stage with KerryB laying down some beats, so it’ll be highly danceable instrumental electronic music
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
My website is my main promo activity – http://ynotb.weebly.com/
Otherwise, I’m active on Soundcloud and Bandcamp. I have a small webstore to set physical products, including audio cassettes. I’m active on the Ambient Online forum.
Who have you been listening to lately?
Aphex Twin, the Ambient Online 8 compilation album, Brian Eno, Radiohead, Massive Attack, Daevid Allen, Erasure.
I saw The Kooks live in Hamburg a couple of weeks ago. Very good!!
Tell us about your passions
I love sailing and building boats. I also like to build synths and do any sort of design and construction work on my house.
What else is happening next in your world?
I’m about to start building a 32ft sailboat. I anticipate releasing a new album in the winter.
Thanks for an awesome interview, Tony!
