Artist Interview: Xanaduduo

Artist Interview: Xanaduduo

Tell us about yourself and your music

My partner and I are a piano vocal duo. We adore songs from the golden era of music, i.e late 1920’s to 1930’s. We started off compiling songs from the old musicals featuring Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. Most of these songs continue as jazz standards today. However, we see ourselves more as a cocktail lounge duo. Our music works well in the background when people are dining or for a relaxed chilled out atmosphere.
We also perform music from the 60’s, i.e Burt Bacharach, Carpenters, Streisand and a several covers from other artists that we find intriguing. Lately, we have been inspired by Brazilian jazz from the 60’s, i.e Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Talk to us more about your latest release

We keep on populating our soundcloud account with the latest songs that we work on. The last track we worked on is ‘How Insensitive’, made popular by Antonio Carlos Jobim, in Portugeise.

What inspired you to write this release?

We heard a jazz singer, Liane Carrol perform a version of this song live, which inspired us to do our own version of this song. Edward, my partner’s talent for playing dramatically, I felt gave it the impact we wanted.

Any plans to release a video?

We have a video we have been working on, in keeping with the style of the 30’s to 40’s. The song is called ‘Guilty’.

Any plans to hit the road?

Not at the moment. I’m working on my final year of my Master’s degree in Autism and Asperger’s syndrome, so music has had to be a passionate hobby. The hope one day is for Edward and I to take our music to Cruise Ships.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

We are Xanaduduo, a piano cocktail lounge duo. The music we choose are from decades gone, so we are not trying to be modern, but recapture the romance from the past. We aren’t really trying to stand out, but just share what we enjoy with our audience.

Who have you been listening to lately?

Matt Monroe, Liane Carrol, Al Bowly, Noel Coward as the latest. Although recently, I’ve been listening to Zona Sul, Brazilian artist. Edward and I are always on the lookout for more songs we can work on.

Tell us about your passions

As for me, Katrina, I love yoga, of all forms, walking in nature and I get quite passionate about injustice in the world.

What else is happening next in your world?

I’m in my final year, completing my Masters degree in Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. I’m hoping to help young adults with autism make sense of sexuality, sex, romantic relationships, socialising in general. Autism is in my family, so my passion to understand and help others stems from that. I suppose, the aim is to go back to Asia and make something work from that as well as continuing with the music we love.

Thanks for an awesome interview, Katrina!
