Artist Interview: Voodoo Kings

Tell us about yourself and your music

I am and have been a professional musician for a long time. I won’t tell you how long but more than 20 years and I have enjoyed every moment of it. It does have it’s challenges as does every career but in the end I wouldn’t change a thing. The amount of joy and single focus when I play and am on stage is really amazing. Thinking about that the other day and I don’t find that in other things that I do. I am also a free lance audio engineer as well. I started doing that very early on because I wanted something to enhance my music abilities. I never wanted to be, say a waiter, and then say I am in a band and ‘were going to make it’…I never thought that was a solid outlook. I wanted to be able to understand the recording process and be able to do my own recordings with out being blind to the process. It makes a difference. Writing songs and making demos is such a cottage industry these days. I have also been able to write music for corporate communications as well and that is just another way to enhance the wiring skills.

Talk to us more about your latest release

The VOODOO KINGS are releasing music this year and its been too long. I have had quite a pause since our last release with having two awesome daughters, relocating and raising my kiddos. It has also allowed me to take a step back and learn what works and what doesn’t work as an artist and that works for me. We are headed into the studio next month and will be releasing singles throughout the year. So stay tuned and look for new VOODOO KINGS music.

What inspired you to write this release?

I think that just writing in general and sketching out ideas you have to put out new music in order to stay relevant. Hell, Metallica released a new CD this year and its awesome. They don’t have to release music but its a drive that musicians all have and for me I want to be able to keep that process fresh and recording a CD is always a challenge and brings out new colors and narratives that just come out in the process.

Any plans to release a video?

Any plans to hit the road?

We are currently looking into dates of the summer of 2017 and you can find all that on our website at or our Facebook page.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

I think that that is the biggest challenge for any indie artist out there. I personally haven’t had the luxury of being on a label where there might be a promo department or a social media director wherein those tasks can be covered and focused on by people whose job it is to do those things. I try to focus on what we are best at. I think that image is still very important and putting on a great show when performing live is the pinnacle of what you can do to strengthen and solidify your brand. The music is first and foremost. Without the music then everything else just doesn’t matter. Engaging when you can on social media is also important but it will never be as important as a great song.

Who have you been listening to lately?

Well there is Blackberry Smoke, Drive By Truckers, Marty Stuart., they all have new records out as well as the Stones latest record ‘Blue and Lonesome’. I grew up in Chicago listening to the blues and seeing all the greats like Muddy and Albert Collins and folks like that. That material will never be dated. So its really important for me to find those guitar driven bands that for me exemplify what rock n roll really is. Its a true American art form.

Tell us about your passions

Well most of the time my kids get me out of bed in the morning so there’s that. I also am a bit of a gym rat so that keeps me focused and away from past bad habits. I love to ride my motorcycle, ski, play hockey and spend as much time as I can with my family and friends because I know that time is something I can’t make. I can always make more money or manufacture something but time is something no one can make so take advantage of it, because you never know when it will be gone….

What else is happening next in your world?

Thanks for an awesome interview, Michael!
