Artist Interview: Swilly

Tell us about yourself and your music

I live about 600 miles north of Vancouver British Columbia in a small fishing community called Prince Rupert. For those struggling with geography Prince Rupert is just below the Alaskan pan handle. Strangely, it’s not that cold here and it rarely snows as the ocean currents coming up the coast from Mexico and California keeps the climate mild. So thank you California for doing your part to keep my ass warm. It does rain here though, and it’s often the main topic of visitors cruising up to see Alaska. It is very pristine and beautiful though and if you love fishing this would be your paradise. While I have only live here a few years I have notice that there are a lot of talented musicians here and I am sure some of them will be seen in the global music scene soon.

Talk to us more about your latest release

‘Who Says’ was released about 2 weeks ago and seems to resonate with some people. I am not sure if its the lyrics or the driving beat. I enjoyed recording this song as it’s just fun to play.

What inspired you to write this release?

‘Who Says’ was written at a time when I was noticing our cultures view on the use of time and the constraints we put on ourselves and our children to fit into the standard norm. Finding the joy in a moment of time as we did as children for most of us has been lost. Always looking to the future for satisfaction or fulfillment is a fools game. That and there might be a bit of frustration towards myself having fun in the studio/bar but due to obligations the following day having to cut it short for the night.
I realize this story could easily be countered with a story about an ant and a grasshopper but what we were never told was sometimes you just get stepped on and it doesn’t matter how hard you worked. So in short, you just need to enjoy the moment, see what the day can bring and when its over get your ass back to work you slackers.
Those of you familiar with ZZtop will definitely find some influences embedded into this song.

Any plans to release a video?

I would love to release a video but this is not an area that I have ventured into as of yet. If the learning curve of music video’s is as steep as the studio it might be awhile or most likely I will be hiring someone who already has the experience. Ya I think I will go with the latter choice. So stay tuned.

Any plans to hit the road?

For the time being the only tour dates will be in my local area for some summer festivals. Unfortunately the dates are not set as of yet.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

For me branding in this industry is more about being yourself. I am sure there are those who play a role but I believe your greatest asset is yourself (a rich uncle wouldn’t hurt either). I think of all the friends I have and I am pretty sure I never once thought, god this person is just like ‘insert star here’ and their awesome. With this in mind I choose songs that I like and do the very best I can to deliver a great product. The indie community is a very welcoming and supportive place. This has been the greatest surprise to me and I only hope I can contribute to the community and if possible help out if asked upon.

Who have you been listening to lately?

The Crew
Klaus Passegger
Jac Dalton

Tell us about your passions

I love to travel and see the world and meeting new people and hear their stories. I have a great love of fishing and there isn’t to many things in the world better than a cold beer and a line in the water.

What else is happening next in your world?

My current short term plans are to continue recording and learning that craft. I have recently started collaborating with a talented guitar player (Klaus Passegger ) from Austria and I plan to release ‘Breakin Some Glass’ within a few weeks. I also would like to formally put a band together for future touring purposes.

Thanks for an awesome interview, Steven!
