Artist Interview: PAYNE ASYLUM
Tell us about yourself and your music
I was born in 1976, Medicine Hat, AB Canada. I grew up listening to all things rock, and metal. Iron Maiden was my favorite band as a kid (metallica a close second). I was in grade 6 I believe, when I got my first strat copy guitar. Played a little until I got my first REAL guitar, a 1989 charvel 475sp left handed. I played quite a bit in my teenage years, until I got into cars and house audio. I didn’t play all that much for MANY years, but I never forgot all the old maiden, metallica and death angel I played all those years ago. I could never find the right people to get a band together. I didn’t want to play covers, I have always played by ear and wanted to play originals. Fast forward to 2013, I was contacted several times by a local guy who had heard about my playing abilities. Finally I went to his large converted garage/studio and we hit it off right away. He played drums, guitar, bass and vocals. So we start recording some demos under the name “payne asylum”, when Kevin was diagnosed with lung cancer. We only got a couple of songs done before Kevin’s passing. I decided to keep the project going on my own. Now I do everything myself, guitars, bass, drums (beat buddy),vocals.
Talk to us more about your latest release
It’s a little different than previous material, I created almost all of the sound effects, and samples myself in my basement studio. It is mostly about space and aliens.
What inspired you to write this release?
I’m always watching alien conspiracy shows and astronomy stuff.
Any plans to release a video?
I’ve been wanting to do a video, it will happen soon.
Any plans to hit the road?
No tour plans at the moment.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
Who have you been listening to lately?
I’ve been into a lot of really heavy stuff (the haunted, feared, tryptyicon, as well as digging out the old classic metal (helloween, maiden, death angel).
Tell us about your passions
Parasomnia gets me up every morning lol. And living on an acre of land in the bc kootenays, there is always lots to do.
What else is happening next in your world?
I’m going to start some new music soon. I’m thinking something really heavy. I know of a really good female vocalist who I might get to do some tracks on. Spring is coming, the festival season looks good this year.
Thanks for an awesome interview, Shawn!
