Artist Interview: Nat Berhanu

Tell us about yourself and your music

My name is Nat Berhanu, I currently live In England. I say that because I have moved many times in my life not just from town or states to other but from one country to another since the age of 12. Ethiopia, Kenya, USA, & Now the UK. I grew up in the states was educated there but moved to the UK through marriage. I still get confused with American English and English & English. I Think I might have offended a lot of people in the process.
My music is original melodies, fresh, try new different things in every song I write. I cover all genre’s specially in Music Electronica. From House Music, Pop, Trance, Electro Soul/Jazz, Techno, Berlin Minimal & much more.

Talk to us more about your latest release

My latest release is called ‘Fun House’ From My debut album ‘Incredulous’
An Electro House Track. It has a feeling of the playground with all kinds of people enjoying in the dance including adults & children. Especially in the middle of the Track, I imagine playing and dancing at the playground. It is instrumental.

What inspired you to write this release?

The album ‘Incredulous’, I made with club-goers in mind. When I was choosing the place of the tracks, I thought I should include this track at the end of this long 18 track album. ‘Fun House’ is at no. 17.
Not surprised greatly when ‘Incredulous’ received review’s & the theme of the album was exactly what I had in mind as the writers did. I feel ‘Fun House’ is slightly out of place. One could have it on a playground as well as a club. I suppose the track is about a house full of Fun.

Any plans to release a video?

Yes. I am making arrangements to have a music video made with a company in the UK. It’s for one of the tracks which went viral on Soundcloud, ‘Sign Post-Break The Fear’
I have written an original storyline and by summer It should be made & released.
I did make a music video for the track ‘Beauty Of The Sky’ and is on youtube.
There are other promotional videos and live performances on that same channel.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes. I am trying to work out which format. I like to DJ dance tracks in a club or whatever venue but in the future, I want to combine electronica and perhaps playing a keyboard, like a jam session. I have not set a date and location for that yet.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

I made a conscious decision & effort to be different and new both in the sound and be a reflection of the various types of music I have listened to all my life and still listen to.I think I have set myself apart and I am sure of that because first of all, I have done everything from composing, recording, producing, advertising, marketing with absolutely no experience. I had to learn certain things the hard way. The fact that I have maintained well plus have a presence in the online community certain speaks for itself. Relentless pursuit, not afraid to make mistakes, not afraid to learn, keep learning, slightly lucky to find things I need and use them to propel me forward. Finally, I wouldn’t have gone this far without being promoted. Promotion is the oxygen in the entertainment business. I have been able to be lucky in finding the right reputable companies. Not only that, I am also building my own label co. I have so far been productive and also reliable. I am original. No question there.

Who have you been listening to lately?

Drum & Bass, Jazz, dance music, hip hop everything that sounds good on Spotify and Soundcloud.
I love electronic music made great but simply.

Tell us about your passions

The First thing I do is put on my headphones. After that coffee. Strong Ethiopian coffee. The best in the world.

What else is happening next in your world?

I want to learn to make films. I have been taking an online course from NYIP, New York Institute Of Photography. I take a lot of photos throughout the day. I have thousands of different types of photography. Selfies as well. Watching a great movie and music videos.

Thanks for an awesome interview, Nat!
