Artist Interview: Mind Me Minimally

Artist Interview: Mind Me Minimally

Tell us about yourself and your music

I’m a Colorado native producer, director, and media consultant. Mind Me Minimally is my solo music project because I love creating art. When I was 9, I discovered a process known as looping and thought it was the coolest thing. I wanted to be a one-man band. I picked up a number of different instruments throughout the years but my interest peaked when I discovered a MIDI controller and linked it with some music software ten years later. With all the instruments combined into one, I made Mind Me Minimally.

Talk to us more about your latest release

I just released my first independent EP ‘Over Reaction’ this year 2018. While I was working on it, I was finishing up my Masters in St. Louis and deciding what my next life move would be. All of the songs on the EP reflect the inner turmoil I was going through.

What inspired you to write this release?

The experiences I had while away at college. I majored in video production and because my school partnered with a lot of non-profits in order to produced video content, I saw a lot of situations that impacted me. I saw teenagers without homes which inspired the song After Dark. I saw friends struggling with life which inspired the song Candle Light. I would describe my music as upbeat, bright and positive but my writing style always includes serious undertones.

Any plans to release a video?

My first music video for my single “Ankles” will be released at the end of January. We’ve already shot the video and it’s in post-production. I’m editing it myself because I have the background to do so.

Any plans to hit the road?

I have submitted to perform at FoCoMX in Ft. Collins, CO in April but will not hear back until February of this year. If that goes well I would love to build a show and tour this summer.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

The fact that I’m a black female artist is a factor that makes me stand out to other people but I brand myself as an experimental artist. I’ve only had one release and I consider it a test run to see where I can improve and what I need to do in order to define and tweak my brand.

Who have you been listening to lately?

I listened to a lot of music and a lot of different styles so I’ll just start listing them. Little Comets, Bleachers, Amber Run, Queen Herby, Pheobe Ryan, Sigrid, Stromae, Haim.

Tell us about your passions

I’m naturally an active person so I don’t usually relax and rest for long, plus my brain never shuts down so I’m always thinking of a new thing to do or another song to make.

What else is happening next in your world?

I don’t know and that calms me.

Thanks for an awesome interview, Imani!
