Tell us about yourself and your music
I’m a U.K based singer/songwriter. I started singing from the age of 6 and wrote my first song aged 11 before really exploring songwriting in my mid-teens. My music is a reflection of my life, meaning that everything I write about is from some kind of experience. I consider my music to be extremely honest, raw and has a lot of depth and substance.
Talk to us more about your latest release
Late last year, I released my debut single ‘Scar of Your Love’ which received an incredible response from people, much more than I could have anticipated. The track itself was one of the first me and co-writer Simon Pereira wrote for the record. Now I’m preparing the second single release which we shot a video for this weekend with Chris Brooker, that shoot was one of the greatest moments I’ve had so far throughout this whole journey.
The new track talks of the darkest moments I’ve had whilst in relationships or dating people. I really wanted to highlight the fact that even when you feel like your the only person going through that, there’s millions of people across the world that are going through the same thing.
What inspired you to write this release?
The inspiration for the second single is similar to what inspired the first single. It’s about a situation that happened in London, where I found myself holding onto something that just wasn’t there anymore. It’s only until recently that I’ve been able to accept that.
I remember sitting at my keyboard one day working on something totally different, I think it was a ballad, and then this explosive chorus hit me. Up until that point, I’d be searching for another up-tempo track that was still honest and raw but I experienced writer’s block a lot during this period. And then when the chorus came to me, I sent it over to Simon and he loved it, so we decided this was definitely a song that we had to finish. The lyrics are extremely dark at times, but the chorus has a sing-along anthem type lyric that I hope people love as much as I do.
Any plans to release a video?
We released a video for the first single ‘Scars of Your Love’ in September last year. We also shot a new video for the latest single (to be released soon) this past weekend which I’m really proud of. We’ve taken risks and chances with the new video and come up with new and exciting ways to get the story of the track across through visuals. So be on the look out for that!
Any plans to hit the road?
I’ll be doing shows up and down the country later on this year throughout the summer. We’re also planning something exciting for the day of the release for the EP which will be announced in the coming weeks.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
I’m quite am organic and natural artist. I like to reach out to people the old way, by performing for people and letting them watch the emotions you go through on stage. I like to make it personal for everybody, I want to be an accessible artist for people not only to listen to music, but also feel like they can approach me in the street and feel completely comfortable doing that.
Who have you been listening to lately?
Recently I’ve been listening to Emeli Sande’s latest record ‘Long Live The Angels’, I can’t hype that album up enough. It’s incredible. Also I’m getting into Aquilo, Tom Odell, Nadia Reid and Tobias Jesso Jr.
Tell us about your passions
Family. Family is extremely important to me. They motivate me to give it everything that I’ve got everyday.
What else is happening next in your world?
I’m more focused than I’ve ever been throughout this whole process. I just can’t wait to release the entire project to share my stories with people. So hard work is next in my world and I can’t wait for the sleepless nights ha ha, oh I’m also looking forward to travelling. That should be fun
Thanks for an awesome interview, Martin!
