Tell us about yourself and your music
My name is Paul Blackman- Busby. I was born in Georgetown, Guyana and raised in the United States in New York City. I began Elementary School in Jamaica, Queens and then moved to Long Island after Junior High. I started writing and rapping in High School but got better after I transferred to Newark, New Jersey. After I graduated, I made my first demo and started performing for A&Rs & fans in cyphers in NY. One of those cyphers got the attention of JMJ Records and I was invited to intern for the label on the Street Team for its ONYX release SHUT EM DOWN. This situation did not last however because of a lack of funds and being caught up in the wrong crowds and being arrested. I am currently living outside of the US after being deported in 2010. Fittingly my music depicts the struggle & Street Elements of Hip Hop & Rap music in a Clean & Positive manner, while still keeping it authentic with the Ghettos around the world.
Talk to us more about your latest release
After recording songs, then uploading & sharing them on Social Media I was contacted by an Independent Digital Hip Hop/EDM Record Label out of the US on twitter and recorded a song for them. After which they responded with two more songs to record. This has yet to be released but will be distributed globally digitally by New Dawn Music Group (NDMG) as part of a compilation EP/Mixtape.
What inspired you to write this release?
I am always inspired to write and record. I have 2 or 3 albums of material already written that just needs to be recorded. After speaking with the label, I knew that I needed to make a song that would be able to grab the masses and keep them entertained with a dope concept & lyrics.
Any plans to release a video?
Yes, I have plans on releasing a video. Because it is a compilation I would have to get the release information from the label and then make some visuals for the song.
Any plans to hit the road?
I have plans to hit the road but those are long term plans, nothing short term as yet.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
I have started a Record Label that will be my exclusive brand, Barr Non Music Recordings (BMR). I try to keep my music relative to my life and experiences, past/current trends and styles and the ghetto culture and prison lifestyle while keeping it Clean. I believe that this has allowed me to stand out better because not many artists have delivered that type of message without cursing or making derogatory remarks on record.
Who have you been listening to lately?
I am a 70s Baby so my influence is music of that era and even before. I listen to music outside of my Genre so that I do not unintentionally “bite” or copy a rappers style and or wordplay with their lyrics, but overall I am a supporter of all artists signed or unsigned no matter what genre it is, because it is a model for success and financial independence and freedom.
Tell us about your passions
Because of my experiences and circumstances, I have adopted the disposition of Reform. Social Consciousness and Universal Awareness. Helping other people attain their rightful place in a unique world that will accept their uniqueness, because even though we are all different we are all the same.
What else is happening next in your world?
I am a Public Speaker and Recovering Member of Society who tries to instill in persons with disadvantages that “the bad way is not the good way” and that crime is a dead end road to Jail and Death.
Thanks for an awesome interview, Paul!
