Artist Interview: LM Blair

Tell us about yourself and your music

I’m a Songwriter and Producer, Voice Over Talent, Audio Engineer, completely self taught on all of the above. I love music. Music is just one of many gifts from The Creator Of All Things, and my interpretation of music is my gift to the world.

Talk to us more about your latest release

My latest release is called “Dry Eyes” which I just released it on YouTube today, 2-1-2017. I actually started writing this song back in 1997. A good friend of mines Roderick Innes Smith and I had recorded a demo of it back then but it wasn’t finished. He wrote the first verse and the chorus, but for some reason we just never got back to finishing it. Well for me his lyrics were perfect for the song as in a great fit, for I was just coming out of my first divorce. So fast forward to today, I have an upcoming third divorce and this reminded me of that song that’s been in my head since 1997. So Roderick and I just grew apart in terms of time and distance he wasn’t that easy to reach, so I felt compelled to just finish the song of course accredited him, and I finished the second verse and rerecorded the music completely into something closer to whats current, but keeping the main vibe of the song. So I just sung it to the best of my ability and this version was finally born and completed. So far the reviews have been pretty incredible, I’m amazed how I can take a negative incident in my personal life and completely turn it into something beautiful and how well it impacts people. That saying that was in the movie “The Five Heartbeats” where Robert Townsend’s character was accepting an award and in his acceptance speech he confirmed that he was once told that “You become a better writer, when you suffer more…” I have found this to bebpersonally true. Mostly all of my R&B songs are me turning horrible experiences that I have gone through in the name of love and turning them into something beautiful.. it’s therapy and a coping mechanism for me.

It’s ironic how I can write the most beautiful things about the women that I have loved and given my absolute best to… and I can’t even play these songs for them, as in it means absolutely nothing to them… but yet I can completely emotionally move and inspire a complete stranger that understands the song and can see the beauty in it. My songs fall upon deaf ears upon those I actually wrote them about. Very strange fact about my music.

What inspired you to write this release?

Facing a divorce for the third time in my life. Also, this was a song I started 20 years ago after the first divorce and I never finished it until yesterday, and I released it today.

Any plans to release a video?

I just released “Dry Eyes” today on YouTube and there are other songs of mine that are there as well.

Any plans to hit the road?

I’m a physically disabled person and traveling isn’t something I can do all that well. At my age, I’m not really trying to be an “artist” per se… I just love music and I express myself through music and would love to produce music for other artists that are in that limelight and such for them to do. I’m more of a songwriter/producer more than I consider myself to be an artist.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

I just am an absolute newbie at the entire marketing and promoting part of it, most of what I have been doing is just simply trying to figure out the ideas I have in my head and record them. I do the best I can with marketing and social media, and again that part is all new to me. There’s so much for me to learn there.

Who have you been listening to lately?

Mali Music, j’hene Atiko, Gregory Porter, Joey Badass, J.Cole.

Tell us about your passions

What gets me out of bed… is the opportunity to learn how to use my freewill to manifest the positive changes that I wish to see over matter. Thought/form. To be the better change that I would best like to see in this world. To use the infinite potential of my spirit to rise above and overcome all adversity. To completely transition from living an existence as reactionary, but to shift that to one of authoring… creating my destiny.

What else is happening next in your world?

Huge things just around the corner with the birth of a newly formed independent television network. I’m a Finder/ Content Scout Recruiter as in providing content for this network. Big things are in the works for 2017, this should be one incredible year for me.

Thanks for an awesome interview, Lesley!
