Tell us about yourself and your music
I create instrumentals. When rappers hear them they start rapping, singers start to sing. I don’t rap or sing, so it effects me differently. I go places, I see different scenes. So I hear, riding music, video game music, radio/television commercials, movie soundtracks, etc. Music is very visual for me.Our lives are a soundtrack.
Talk to us more about your latest release
My most recent production, Oowee, is a tribute in recognition of the DJ and the role they play in hip-hop…no, music in general.
What inspired you to write this release?
One day, while having a meeting of the minds with some fellow producer/engineer friends, taking turns selecting youtube videos, we listened to everything from RUN DMC to Public Enemy, LL to Kid Rock, Guru and DJ Premier to Erick B and Rakim. Well, L rocked the bells and Jeff was Jazzy, but the DJ just kept jumping out at me, making me want to do something that would pay homage to them for all they have done and continue to do. Thank you, Mr. D!
Any plans to release a video?
I have had several request to have it put to video, but haven’t done so yet. I want it to be animated, kinda Speed Racer-ish. Budgeting is kind of an obstacle, though. Those animated videos can get costly real quick!
Any plans to hit the road?
I’m definitely open to hitting the road if and when the demand occurs
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
That is actually still being researched and yet to be determined. I recently had both hands and both legs amputated due to a blood disease that caused clotting. I am currently being fitted for bionics, so I’m thinking of transforming into the Cyborg Producer or DJ HandsFree. I don’t think that’s too gimmicky, considering the circumstances. I am still banging them out…just on a drum pad now, rather than a keyboard.
Who have you been listening to lately?
My playlist includes Chillhop Cafe, Prince, Esperanza Spalding, Miles Davis, Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, Foreign Exchange, Mo3, CFN Dinero, Young Taye and Moneygram, Migos, Jaco Pastorius, Return To Forever, Cameo, EWF and many more
Tell us about your passions
My greatest passion is simple. It is the basic, a desire to live. Not just to survive, but to live life to it’s fullest’ I wasted alot of life prior to getting ill, I have more time/life to waste. I have to create my legacy, which must continue long after my time on earth is up. I’m a father two and a pawpaw to seven grandchildren, to whom I am a Super Hero!
What else is happening next in your world?
Well, first of all learning how to walk again, with prosetic legs. After that, making music with prostetic hands. I know it sounds like quite a mountain to climb, but I’m up for the challenge.
Just taking life one day at a time, thanking GOD for every minute.
Thanks for an awesome interview, Chauncey!
