Artist Interview: Kerstin Stilling
Tell us about yourself and your music
My name is Kerstin Stilling. I started writing my own songs at the piano in my childhood home around the age of sixteen. Listened to all kinds of music, Bowie, Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel are big influences for me. Studied music for 3 1/2 years at the Royal Music Academy in Sweden among other schools and was fortunate to be offered a job as a lead singer in a band right after. It was a very developing time for me as a singer but I longed for the songwriting and moved to the countryside with my husband and built my own Studio. I have released four albums since 2004 and 2007 I was honored to win Best Jazz Female Vocal at Los Angeles Music Awards at Henry Fonda Theatre in Hollywood. Became a widow eight years ago unfortunately so I have raised my two sons on my own and therefore work as a chef too. Two creative jobs can never be wrong;-)
Talk to us more about your latest release
My latest album Akleja was released in 2018 and holds songs both in Swedish and English. I have written all the songs and I produced the whole album. My biggest goal is to touch someone’s heart. Comfort, growing pain, release and some power to continue life and realize how good you are throughout the greyest day. One step at a time.
What inspired you to write this release?
This album is a celebration to life. My third album A Friendly Face was a black and white album after my husband had died rapidly from a bleeding brain tumor. Four years after with love from family and friends totally focused to give our sons a safe and bright childhood I was ready to smile again and give back.
Any plans to release a video?
Yes that is my next goal. Absolutely!
Any plans to hit the road?
I will play live in Swedish National Radio on the 8th of February 15.30 pm, two songs and an interview in between.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
I send my records to all the Radiostations in Sweden, I can be found on Spotify, Soundcloud, Youtube, Amazon, Itunes, CDBaby, CDON and my webpage www.kerstinstilling.com. I sell my album when i gig, I give away albums to spread my music and my message, I give free concerts for benefits like Red Cross, SoS Children, Operationsmile.com.
Who have you been listening to lately?
Myself…haha. Before a gig I always do.
Tell us about your passions
First I start a fire to warm up our house. Then I make a cup of tea and look at the birds outside the window. I love to be with my sons, help them with their homework, talk to them about life. I love to cook at home and as a chef at my work and I love to make bouquets and grow flowers in my garden. I read, look at film and series, and I love to write poetry and novels myself. Three times a week I go to the gym for bodybuilding and skiing is a family business too.
What else is happening next in your world?
I have written a novel called “The Wideness Of Never Again” and it will be published this summer in August. I will work full time as a chef for 8 months now because I just released an album. It´s good for me to do something else in between and fill up my senses again. It is draining and wonderful at the same time to create your own material. I have put together 25 poems too that I wrote some time ago and just sent to my publisher and I will give some concerts during the coming months. My oldest son is practicing for drivers license and my youngest son needs lift to the snowboard-slope:-)
Thanks for an awesome interview, Kerstin!
