Artist Interview: JSapp MadStak
Tell us about yourself and your music
I was born in San Diego, CA… However my career in music didn’t actually begin until 1997 while attending Centreville High School in Centreville, VA… It was then, in the 10th grade, that I wrote my first rap. I also realized at that point that this is something I’m pretty good at and love to do. My parents were in the military so I moved a lot as a child. In turn that has to one of my greatest assets as it’s allowed me to become very versatile as an artist.
Talk to us more about your latest release
My latest release titled “V.O.V.” (VINCIT OMNIA VERITAS), is a full length LP. The title is unique in the since that it’s latin for “Truth Conquers All”. I went with that title because there’s so much talk about hip hop loosing it’s way and I’m one of those artists who believes in sticking to the original roots.
What inspired you to write this release?
Simply put, the discussion of whether or not hip hop still remains hip hop… I completely understand that there’s a certain evolution that comes with time but anyone who has a pair of ears and eyes can see that the music has taken a turn for the worst… We all are entitled to our opinions and this is mine. Hip hop is missing that “Raw Grittiness” that made it so popular in the first place. Too much singing and not enough rapping… And when I say not enough rapping I mean dope lyrical content.
Any plans to release a video?
While in Salt Lake City, when I opened for Silkk The Shocker, we shot the video for “Murder He Wrote”. There are plans to eventually release a few more videos as well but nothing in the immediate future.
Any plans to hit the road?
Nothing set in stone for the time being but stay tuned because I’m always getting into something.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
What I try to do is find that one thing that no one else is really doing… With there being so many artists in the world that can sometimes feel like an impossible task. Therefore, I say to just stay true to yourself…
Who have you been listening to lately?
I honestly don’t listen to much of the current music in my genre…
Tell us about your passions
My other 9 to 5… I work in the security industry.
What else is happening next in your world?
Writing, recording, and living the dream!!!!!
Thanks for an awesome interview, Jeffrey!
