Artist Interview: James Woolwine
Tell us about yourself and your music
I consider myself a composer/songwriter. I compose instrumental music on piano and guitar, and write vocal songs which straddle the Rock/Folk/Country realms. I’m at a crossroads in my career where I’m starting to look more toward the possibilities of just creating music rather than performing, but I still aspire to perform.
Talk to us more about your latest release
My last album was also my first, entitled “Solo Piano Destruction”. As the title states, it’s solo piano; but not what you typically hear in that genre. I would consider it Contemporary Classical music, and there are some face-melters; hence the word “destruction”.
What inspired you to write this release?
Piano was my first instrument, so it was fitting to reflect that on my first album. It was also the best instrument to express the modern “Classical” sound I was trying to create.
Any plans to release a video?
I record homemade videos when I can, and hope to graduate up to professional videos in the near future.
Any plans to hit the road?
No touring in my immediate future. I’m about to be a Dad!
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
It’s always a challenge to stand out, but I just try to create quality music that is honest and genuine; taking inspiration from what I like without copying.
Who have you been listening to lately?
Jason Isbell, lots of random Classical music, and I dug up my old Exies CD from ten years ago.
Tell us about your passions
What do you mean “Besides music…”?
What else is happening next in your world?
I’m in the midst of a crowdfunding campaign for my first solo guitar album. I want to complete this album before my wife gives birth to our twins in March!
Thanks for an awesome interview, James!
