Artist Interview: I.Am.Tru.Starr
Tell us about yourself and your music
My name is I.Am.Tru.Starr but all my friends just call me “Tru.” I’m an artist/songwriter from New York…Rochester to be exact! My music is a direct representation of my life’s experiences and influences. It’s rebel soul, ultra funk hop. A twist of gospel, Hiphop and full of truth. Around here we just call it “Soul Hop”. Cuz it make ya soul hop around when u listen to it. See…music is healing and it’s a process we all must go thru together. So press play and let that process begin.
Talk to us more about your latest release
I have released a few previous projects…most notably “hair like basquiat.” which was released in 2015. It’s the genesis of the “Soul Hop” sound. I’d released music before then but that was the project where I found my voice. That project would be followed by a part 2 entitled “B-Sides”. Essentially the b-side to the “hair like basquiat.” A-side. Me and the Rage.The.Stage team are prepping the release of my next project. A short film and soundtrack entitled “Smoke Break.” Coming very very soon
What inspired you to write this release?
The inspiration for the project was essentially growth, and the internalization of society’s ills at that time. A lot of lilling of innocent black and brown men and women. A lot of social injustice. It seemed that 2014/2015 began the unveiling process for Americans. Where the veil of ignorance towards social injustices that had been going on for forever, was lifted off our eyes. The world started seeing what we and black Americans had been seein for generations. That time led us to Charlottesville and life in this country as we know it today. Who woulda thought we’d be here?…the answer to that question is..”us”! The ghetto saw this coming. Black America saw this coming. Not because we are clairvoyants…but because that’s all we ever seen in the first place. 2015 is when we welcomed the rest of society to the party.
Any plans to release a video?
If done right and true to the spirit of art…Visuals and audio are one in the same. The only difference is if your eyes are open or not.
Any plans to hit the road?
We always on the road. This grind don’t stop for nothing or no one. One nation under art over here.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
Staying true to myself. There’s only one me out here!
Who have you been listening to lately?
Felt kuti, Graves, Kendrick, D’Angelo, George Clinton, Migos, Toro y moi, SZA, Tiffany Gouche, and a lot of other stuff. Music is everything to me so I keep a very healthy diet of vibes
