Artist Interview: Five Pound Opinion

Artist Interview: Five Pound Opinion

Tell us about yourself and your music

In the way that Black Sabbath wanted to amake music inspired by British Horror films, I wanted to make music that is inspired by David Lynch and surealistic films. This is what I created under the name Five Pound Opinion.

Talk to us more about your latest release

The latest Five Pound Opinion album is called “Taunt/Caress”. An alternative album with furious moments (Taunt) and ambient moody acoustic songs (Caress) – but all are melody-driven.

What inspired you to write this release?

I derive more inspiration from film directors than other bands and musicians. It’s a great challenge to take what is visual and recreate that exchange in the listener’s mind using only sound and music. It puts them into communication with their own creative pictures.

Any plans to release a video?

I have 2 music videos off this album so far.

Any plans to hit the road?

Not at this time. The plan is to further promote the songs in the album and enlist directors to carry out the visual element of this project. I want to reinvent the way concerts are presented with this project.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

First and foremost, I think the music itself has to be different enough while still being appealing.

After that the game becomes promoting way, way more than you would think it’s necessary. Constantly letting people know that you’re there, constantly telling people about things going on in your world, and creating a community with similar interests is the way I have been doing it both as Jon Statham and Five Pound Opinion.

Who have you been listening to lately?

I have been listening to a LOT of Black Sabbath lately. Sometimes you just have to go back to the originators if you want to be an originator yourself

Tell us about your passions

Ultimately I feel that music helps people tremendously, whether just putting on your favorite album or going to see a concert. People can get lost in music and forget about their troubles and maybe gain a new perspective on how to solve their problems .

What else is happening next in your world?

I’ve kept myself busy producing other songwriters, playing into bands, and I am currently writing a film treatment.

Thanks for an awesome interview, Jon!
