Artist Interview: Eric bone daddy spaulding
Tell us about yourself and your music
I have been playing guitar since I was 18. I picked it up while in the Air Force, which is where I got the nickname “Bone Daddy”. I have grown of course. I am married with a stepson and a daughter. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia about 7 years ago. It definitely has slowed me down, but I get out and play whenever I get the chance. Playing guitar has given me purpose. The first time I recorded anything was at home and I gotta say it came out pretty good. I have a lot of support for what I do and that is what makes me love to play songs and making new music.
Talk to us more about your latest release
“The Devils in the details ” was a compilation of songs I never thought I would record. My wife got me studio time at Subcat Studios in Syracuse, NY for my 40th birthday. I couldn’t let the family down so I went through my old books and picked out some tunes I wrote. Then I figured I better put pen to paper and write some newer songs. I ended up writing every song on the album and left my old tunes out. Someday I will be back in the studio and I can lay down the old songs that I wrote. But for now, I am happy with the way that “The Devils in the Details” came out.
What inspired you to write this release?
You always get new ideas as a songwriter. The tone of this album was to bring my punk side out to people who usually only hear me play acoustic covers. The first track starts with just me and my acoustic. Then I go full out and rock the rest of the way.
Any plans to release a video?
I have thought about it but haven’t pursued anything yet. The song “Set it on fire ” is about the riots at Woodstock 99. I live nearby and thought about filming a video on location for that song. But it takes a lot of time and money and I’m gonna have to wait to have any of that.
Any plans to hit the road?
No big plans for that .. I play locally at a lot of places. If I was traveling with the right band I would love it.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
Basically, I go with the flow so to speak. There is a lot of chances to get your music heard out there. I have taken Facebook and some others but not just one is not going to be any better than the rest. The more I spread out the more I will be seen.
Who have you been listening to lately?
I listen to a lot of new indie artists. I like the effort and style in all the new artist’s songs. There is a lot of great talent out there.
Tell us about your passions
I am a Mr. Mom I guess. My family all ways comes first in my life. I keep myself going and it takes the focus off of the aches and pains from fibromyalgia. I have a nice easy going life and I like to keep everyone happy and healthy.
What else is happening next in your world?
I have been busy again this summer. I get a lot of gigs this time of year. I plan on recording another album in the future but that will take some time so that I can concentrate on what I want to bring to the table.
Thanks for an awesome interview, Eric!
