Artist Interview: Electronomy Deparment

Tell us about yourself and your music

We are Michael Montgomery, who plays synthesizers, programs drum machines and sings, Jasmine Chhouri, who sings, and Stephen Morgana, who plays synthesizers and sings. While we perform the music we make on analogue machines, we are bound to be percieved as an electronic pop music act by most. We have set up some rules for ourselves, though, which essentially prohibits us from going anywhere musically that the lyrical content doesn’t tell us to, so, with regards to genre, we’re not true to any specific one.

Talk to us more about your latest release

Our latest record, Noise Noir, which was released in January, 2017, is set in an imaginary metropolis called Silver City during the 1940’s. It tells the story of two muted citizens in a predominately silent world discovering the sound of music as a means to communicate. It is basically a celebration of the nature of art and how it allows us to create worlds to inhabit.

What inspired you to write this release?

After having recorded our previous record, Fog Of Battle, which was a fairly straightforward process since the actual story that we wanted to tell presented itself clearly very early on, we actually sat down and discussed for the first time what our band Electronomy Department was, and would be, about. We have a background in theatre, and our conversations led us to regard what we were doing as an experiment in theatrical music. That meant that the story would come first, and we would then use electronic instruments to write music to that story. This time we were, in a strictly aesthetic sense, inspired by old black and white movies, and the sound of crackling gramophones.

Any plans to release a video?

Not really. We haven’t ruled it out, but we tend to see the visual representation of what we do as still pictures, since that’s how the stories we write present themselves to us.

Any plans to hit the road?

Not at the moment, no.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

We do not produce any visual representation, or any, of ourselves that isn’t relevant to what we want to accomplish musically. We call what we do Electronic Pop Theatre, because to the best of our understanding of what we do, that’s what it is. As far as standing out, however, that’s another collection of short stories, completely. It’s in our place to be humble and not claim to bring something to the table we don’t.

Who have you been listening to lately?

Roger Waters, mainly. His new album hasn’t been off the turntable for any length of time.

Tell us about your passions

Spending time in the company of sheep in a meadow. Yeah, that would make for a great afternoon. Other than experiencing life in close proximity to nature, making things that weren’t before, preferably in the artistic realm.

What else is happening next in your world?

We are currently recording voices for our follow-up to Noise Noir, a double album entitled Silver City Diaries, which is a continuation of the themes and ideas explored on our latest record.

Thanks for an awesome interview, Michael!
