DownTown Mystic: Rock 'n' Roll Romantic

Tell us about yourself and your music

I started playing guitar and writing songs when I was 13 and began to be in bands around the same time. I’ve always had a thing for the classic sound of rock’n’roll. The music inspired me and I want my music to inspire people. DownTown Mystic is “vintage yet modern”; meaning my musical influences are rock’n’roll greats and I play & record my songs on vintage guitars & equipment, but it sounds as contemporary as anything out now.

Talk to us more about your latest release

My latest release is called “Rock’n’Roll Romantic” and it’s something of a concept album. First, I’m a “Rock’n’Roll Romantic” at heart, meaning I love the music of the 60s & 70s, which is where I draw my influences from. Conceptually, “Rock’n’Roll Romantic” stands for the type of people (rockers) who would be drawn to each other. Rockers are more intense and passionate and when they fall in love, sparks fly. The relationships are usually very unstable because of the intensity of the people involved. The songs are arranged with a song about a relationship on the rocks followed by a breakup song and the music is very emotional.

What inspired you to write this release?

“Rock’n’Roll Romantic” and the “Side Two EP” are my sincere effort to help bring about a rock’n’roll renaissance in the 21st Century. I made them to show that the rock album as an art form is not dead and put it out on a cd to show that the cd is not dead either. I just signed a deal with an Indie UK Label and the 1st release is the “Side Two EP” and it comes out in Europe on Feb. 10 to set up the release of the full “Rock’n’Roll Romantic” album later this year.

Any plans to release a video?

I tend to do Lyric videos because they’re simpler to do. Doing full videos with a few cameras is a lot of work. Also, because I’m called “DownTown Mystic” I want the music to be the focus and keep the mystery of the personality.

Any plans to hit the road?

I’ll probably be heading over to the UK for some promotional dates.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

As I said earlier, the sound of DownTown Mystic is “vintage yet modern”. I don’t sound like anyone out there because of my sound & style and I’ve used it to brand DownTown Mystic, particularly with Sync Licensing. My music has been placed in over 100 TV shows like “The Voice” and “American Pickers”. I also promote heavily to Radio all over the world. My music has been heard on over 10,000 radio stations around the world. “Rock’n’Roll Romantic” is currently on over 65 stations in the US at the AAA, Americana & College formats.

Who have you been listening to lately?

My favorite band out there is Band of Heathens and their new album “Duende”, which has been #1 for the past 2 weeks on the Americana Chart. There’s also a band out of Canada called The Bros. Landreth that I like. Joey Landreth is doing a solo thing at the moment and has just put out a new EP called “Whiskey” that’s really good.

Tell us about your passions

Besides music, social media lol. Since I’m an indie artist I do most of my own promotion and social media can be a 24/7 job. I also like business and doing deals.

What else is happening next in your world?

I just signed a deal with Nub Music in the UK and they just signed a deal for distribution & promotion with ADA, which is the indie arm of Warner Music there. As I stated earlier, I want to help bring about a rock’n’roll renaissance, and where better to start than where the last one started over 50 years ago? Because of its size, the UK is perfect to promote at Radio and get heard by the entire country. Don’t be surprised if you start hearing about “Mysticmania” from over there in the near future. LOL

Thanks for an awesome interview, Robert!
