Artist Interview: Diamante Lavendar
Tell us about yourself and your music
I write music to express what I’ve been through in life. My music is introspective and tells a story about what I’ve encountered.
Talk to us more about your latest release
My newest song, How Do I Love You, is about my daughter who recently passed away. She and I were very close. In this song, I give a few reasons why I loved her so much.
What inspired you to write this release?
The death of my daughter was devastating. But I know she’s still with me. In this song, I sing to her about some of the reasons why I love her. She inspired me to begin writing music again after a 20-year hiatus.
Describe the writing and recording process
It’s really easy for me to write music. I hear it in my head and record it. Then I add instruments or sound effects to spice it up. The recording process is a little tricky since I’m doing it myself. I have been recording with my laptop. The hardest thing for me is mixing it down to have a good sound and balance.
Any plans to release a video?
I have done one lyrics video for my song entitled For My Baby. There will be more lyrics videos coming up. None with me singing though. I’m more interested in selling my music to musicians than being a singer myself.
Any plans to hit the road?
No. I’d like to sell my music to musicians. At this time I’m not interested in doing any concerts or shows.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
I’m an award-winning author and visual artist. I write my music as another artistic form of expression. I’m inspirational in nature with all of my work. I just write about what I know and have experienced. My followers recognize me as being an inspirational artist.
Who have you been listening to lately?
I just found an amazing band called Tinariwen. I love their music! It is an inspirational rock with a different type of feel, maybe a little bluesy. I like different types of music. Ethnic music is something I appreciate a lot. Music from all different cultures.
Who are your biggest influences?
I love the 70’s, 80’s, ethnic music, opera, Christian music and so forth…about the only type of music I don’t care for as much is country. But even some of that I listen to-especially the old country musicians like Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton.
Tell us about your passions
I am an artist through and through. I’ve written four books now. Two are published and two will be published in the next couple of months. I’ve won 14 awards for my writing and 6 awards to date for my visual art. If I could spend every waking minute creating something artistic-music included-I’d be in complete bliss.
What else is happening next in your world?
Two of my books will be published as I mentioned above. I’m really looking forward to that. Plus I’ll be writing more music.
Thanks for an awesome interview, Diamante
