Artist Interview: David The Page

Tell us about yourself and your music

I’ve always loved music – but a bit more Left-Of-Center stuff. When people were listening to 90’s pop, I was listening to The Ventures, Buddy Holly, Tom Waits, and Israeli Folk Music… That’s about where it began. After discovering Colin Hay, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Buckethead – things got real. I started making music that was true to myself; sings from my experiences as well as songs based on my favorite literature. VONNEGUT RULES!

Talk to us more about your latest release

My latest release(s) – one was an album of instrumental music called Return To The Sleeping Cliffs. It was based around my ideas/beliefs/experiences with sleep, falling asleep, dreaming, waking up, nightmares, and insomnia. It was a fun musical experimental venture!
The other current release, I recorded and made around the same time – was a Christmas single – Silent Night, Wednesday Night. It’s a true story from long ago when I lived up north. I tell the story (spoken word) while I play a version of Silent Night in the background. Also, my God-Daughter, Gemini Anderson, contributed her amazing vocals at the end!

What inspired you to write this release?

Everything in its own way can inspire me – but for the album Return To The Sleeping Cliffs – it was just a matter of talking with my Lady and one of our friends, the amazing author Richard H. Barker. We were out for a hike with our dogs and I was talking about the subconscious and sleep. We talked about different ideas behind it as we walked. When I got home, I picked up my guitar and couldn’t put it down. The songs just kept coming!

Any plans to release a video?

Sure, I just released my first video – an entrance to the NPR Tiny Desk Competition. I would love to do more video soon!

Any plans to hit the road?

Not at the moment, but I have been known to do a show or two around my small town of Idylllwild, CA.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

I don’t focus so much on branding, really. I just play music that is true to myself and hope for the best. So far, my three fans really dig it! (laughs)

Who have you been listening to lately?

I always have Colin Hay, Sean Rowe, and Buckethead on my playlists. Tom Petty, Counting Crows and Tom Waits, too. But, more and more, I’m grooving on things like Brian Eno, William Elliot Whitmore – and the mini jams of That Pedal Show. ,

Tell us about your passions

Work? (Laughs ironically)
I love my animals. I have two dogs and three cats – can’t wait to have more. And my Lady. She’s a great painter, photographer, person, animal mom. I love them all so much, they get me through every day.
I also love books! Thus, my name – The Page

What else is happening next in your world?

I have no idea… I suppose I am trying to create more possibilities and make more music!

Thanks for an awesome interview, David!
