Artist Interview: Conflikt

Tell us about yourself and your music

I am a Puerto Rican artist by the name of Conflict, born and raised in New York City in which I eventually moved to Rockland where my poetry transitioned into Hip-Hop. I was inspired by the late greats Big Pun, Big L, Tupac and Biggie and growing up listening to them is the key reason I became the lyricist I am today. May they all rest in peace.

Talk to us more about your latest release

My latest release is titled “Stay Up”. One day I was just browsing through instrumentals to purchase until I came across this beat, produced by Gummy beats and DJ Pain1 which really caught my ear. It was a must buy as soon as I heard it. After constantly listening to the instrumental I came up with the topic of “Stay Up” and this was the outcome which I am very proud of.

What inspired you to write this release?

What inspired me is the fact that I’ve endured a lot in my life whether I was in a bad state of mind, suffering from depression or just outright feeling like it’s just me against the world so I wanted to put a song out there that’s more positive and uplifting to the listeners and can be appreciated by everybody.

Any plans to release a video?

We filmed the video in many iconic areas of New York City that gave it a very urban feel to the song also many great views to enjoy watching. Not only am I proud of the song but I’m very happy with the visuals and the all-around outcome of “Stay Up”. Hope you will enjoy it as well.

Any plans to hit the road?

I would love to hit the road more but for the most part, I’ve only done live performances in Los Angeles, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Long Island, Rockland and New Jersey. Of course, I’d like to expand my horizons someday.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

As an artist, I like to make the audience think. I want them to hear a verse, rewind it and then be like ” wow, did he really just say that?” I want them to embrace the wordplay, every punchline, metaphor, simile and especially the creativity on top of my delivery. Being original is key.

Who have you been listening to lately?

Honestly, I drifted into my own world when it comes to today’s music. Of course I hear what’s on the radio but for the most part, I listen to more of the underground, classic albums from the 90s and 2000s, Dave East, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar etc. Basically, the real Hip Hop heads.

Tell us about your passions

Besides music, I’d have to say family, friends, money and just being positive and motivated. Without that what else is there to live?

What else is happening next in your world?

Not much besides working all the time and trying to get these bill’s paid. Being a professional mover in NYC is not an easy job also it’s very time consuming so when I do get a chance I try to pick up a pen and pad to come up with new material.

Thanks for an awesome interview, Edward!
