Artist Interview: Chand K Nova
Tell us about yourself and your music
I am a self-taught, multi-instrumentalist who hasn’t been blessed with singing ability, unfortunately. I absolutely love music however and didn’t let not having a voice stop me from making music, so I compose instrumental music, and through listening to some of the artists I admire, I learnt that you can still tell a story without necessarily saying a single word, and this is something that I try to do with all of the songs I compose. I play all the instruments on my releases and the emphasis is to tell a story on every single song.
Talk to us more about your latest release
My latest release “Uncuffed” is a 5 track e.p which was released in September. It has been fairly successful, it has received a lot of positive feedback through multiple reviews. The first track on the E.P “El Chando” charted in the top 20 of the Independent European Charts. Songs off this E.P have also received airplay worldwide. Another song off the e.p “Kingdom Come” also has an animated music video which was created by a close friend of mine, Vijay Chand. He came up with the concept, done all the art and animated it all. The video has received play across the USA and has racked up thousands of views on youtube.
The e.p it’s self is acoustic, mixing elements of classical, rock and general acoustic styles and meshing them into something which I believe is unique. All the songs are different stylistically and is a move away from previous e.p’s and albums I Have released previously, particularly switching the Electric Guitar for a classical guitar.
What inspired you to write this release?
A mixture of things inspired me on this release. I always wanted to record and release an acoustic collection of songs and during the process, the songs kind of wrote themselves. I went through a lot of personal changes in my life before and during the process of recording this e.p and this is all reflected in the songs themselves.
Any plans to release a video?
As I mentioned earlier, A video has already been released for the song “Kingdom Come”, there is also a video for the last track on the e.p “The Beginning Of The End” which is also on youtube.
Any plans to hit the road?
Unfortunately not at the moment, but it is something I am looking into doing in the near future!
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
I try and let the music speak for its self. I know that I offer something different to what else is there on the market, being a guitarist first, I try to stay away from playing 1000 notes per second unless I believe it enhances the storytelling, and that’s what I believe sets me apart, the fact that the story is the most important aspect of the song, if you give it a chance you can let it transport you to where ever you want!
Who have you been listening to lately?
At the moment, I have been listening to a lot of Incubus and Richie Kotzen, also some more pop than usual like the Chainsmokers, and a reggae band called Soja! Quite a varied taste, but I believe good music is good music, and that’s what makes it universal, regardless of genre, it’s what makes you feel something.
Tell us about your passions
My work and my family are my other passions outside of music, they keep me really busy and occupied and I have just about enough time to squeeze in music after this!
What else is happening next in your world?
I am in the process of recording a follow up to the Uncuffed E.P which should be completed in the next few weeks and Then I will be planning to release really soon after that, once that is out, I will start composing for my next batch of songs! The new E.P I am working on features more lead playing, big melodies and obviously, more storytelling!!
Thanks for an awesome interview, Chandan!
