Artist Interview: Bilirubi

Tell us about yourself and your music

Like many kids in their teens I started bands with friends emulating and imitating favourite bands. Jam sessions were usually pretty unorganised and lacked focus. This was through the 90’s listening to pixies, nirvana pearl jam among others go huge.Being from Newcastle we watched as silverchair blew up across Australia and the world. Unfortunately we weren’t that good so apart from a few band comps we disbanded without firing a shot.
A few decades later I’ve rediscovered passion for creating music and the technology is available for home recording on a budget. So the years of high school bands has morphed to a one man band taking responsibility for guitars and vocals with occasional help with th beats. My sound is still 90’s grunge but it’s been dragged through the naughtiest to whatever it is now.

Talk to us more about your latest release

Towards the end of 2016 I decided 20 yrs was enough time to record an album so I laid down two tracks at a local home studio set up. Two song reworked from basic songs from my youth.
Sticks and Stones is a simple bass driven verse with a kind of repeating arpeggio from the guitar flowing into a melodic chorus. The drums keep things rolling along.
The song hobgoblin evolved from two variations on an old bass line I liked with complimenting guitar accent.
The vocals posed the greatest challenge for me.The ethos of just putting it all out there gave good results.

What inspired you to write this release?

The inspiration for sticks and stones was to address cyber bullying and pitfalls of being on social media. “It hides behind a screen, can’t walk away, follows you home , on your phone” refers to how these days its very difficult to remove yourself from these situations.
The song hobgoblin was roughly inspired by mental illness (“can you see the monster , see into your mind”) The second half references among other things , Trumps wall building, climate change , plastic island in the ocean, China’s island building and tv singing shows.

Any plans to release a video?

I have ideas for a video with my kids playing the part of both
idol/x factor/voice contestants and judges.
Not sure I wasnt them to have that exposure though

Any plans to hit the road?

Gigging is difficult with full time work and bills to pay however if the album I’m working on can get a bit of interest I’m going to have to get the band back together for a show for friends at least

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

I have attempted to get some sort if online profile using twitter, Facebook , instagram ect. I have posted music to SoundCloud, jjjunearthed and bandcamp as well as distributed to itunes, googleplay, Spotify through Tunecore. I try to engage with other artists and presenters as well as some music blogs and have had my songs shared and reviewed. The most promising feedback is through fans gathered world wide through various music streaming sites and on internet radio.

Who have you been listening to lately?

My tastes still lie in the 90’s with bands like pixies, pavement, nirvana and dinosaur jr. There are some great Australian bands around like violent soho , camp cope , smith street band and children collide.

Tell us about your passions

These days my kids get me out of Bed in the morning, pretty early too. I love any artistic pursuits and enjoy playing and watching sport and the beach.

What else is happening next in your world?

I would have to say work and kids but I have a good balance and am slowly working music into a greater share.

Thanks for an awesome interview, Magnus!
