Tell us about yourself and your music
I’m a grandfather living in Midland, Texas. When my grandchildren started coming along I started writing songs for them. Having been encouraged to record, I released a CD, POPPY’S TUNES.
Talk to us more about your latest release
POPPY’S TUNES is what I would call “genreless.” It gets put in the category of Children’s Music, but it is really Family Music. It’s the kind of music that parents and their kids can enjoy together. The forms range from Western Swing to Lullabies to a Cha-Cha to a jazzy ‘Jesus Loves Me.’ The accompanists are outstanding, from the saxophonist to the fiddle player.
What inspired you to write this release?
Any plans to release a video?
Any plans to hit the road?
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
It’s Family Music that hits numerous genres. Here’s what the local newspaper had to say”:
His voice is East Texas and gravel, sunshine warm and you can hear his smile on the album. I love it. My kids love it. And they can listen to every song on the album. Once I read the liner notes, I loved the songs even more. Many of them he wrote about his grandchildren; others with his children in mind. I love his cover of “Turn Around,” and can just see him watching his daughter Katie grow up when he sings the song. Bodacious loves “Caroline,” and she tries to sing the hook each time. Chase Peeler’s sax accompaniment is perfect. “Griffin’s Gonna Getcha” is just plain fun. It has a chicken, kazoo, cowpoke and even a pirate.
I love that the songs are all different. There’s a cha-cha, some Bob Wills, a lullaby or two, even “Jesus Loves Me” with sax. I also love that the songs can be listened to by anyone. It’s not kiddie music; it’s music that is sweet enough and kind enough and fun enough that children can enjoy it as well. And “Roly Poly” is the very first track. – Melanie Nicholas, Midland Reporter-Telegram
