Artist Interview

Tell us about yourself and your music

I’m Manuel Muzzu, Born in Sardinia, an island in the middle of the mediterranean sea (Italy) on 06/25/1967, I fell in love with a bass guitar when I was 12 years old. Graduate on M.I. Los Angeles in 1994 and U.M. Rome in 1997. I have a handicap on my right hand due to a mistake by the doctors when I was six years old. That prevent me to use all fingers and wrist. In an effort to overcome my disability, I worked hard to find my own technique to play like a normal player, just because passion is much stronger than destiny. I’m a musician, composer, session, and studio player with over 25 years of experience and many musical collaborations, including the “Tazenda” live band, Monica Naranjo, Tom Porcaro and many others. My songs are inspired by all different sounds I manage to extract from my basses in a different jazz style. Basically, I like to play the music I’m interested in, starting with jazz (fusion jazz, smooth jazz, Latin jazz, rock jazz, funk jazz, electronic jazz) where the lead instrument is the bass guitar. You can call it Fusion, maybe it is.

Talk to us more about your latest release

“3-ree” is the third album that I started writing two years ago.
The “COVID-19” lockdown pushed me to find other musicians that could play in the album, and in the end, in three months, the album was ready.
Like my other two albums, “3-ee” is a concentrate of various styles of jazz music, played by versatile musicians with great experience in classical, jazz, and fusion jazz. –

What inspired you to write this release?

Music and ideas came out with no effort while I was practicing my technique.

All songs came out with no effort, in a natural manner, without special help or intervention.

Then I just decided to put together the songs in a “lockdown time” because I was a bit bored.

Describe the writing and recording process

I write my music starting with harmony and then adding the right melody.

After that, I choose the rhythm and I put together these three ingredients trying to create a non-banal work.

All the instrument parts are recorded by the musicians in the home recording.

Then when all material was ready I started to edit in my M² Studio with my professional equipment.

When I was pretty satisfied of the mix I sent everything to my friend Steve Corrao from SAGE AUDIO studio for mastering.

Any plans to release a video?

Any plans to hit the road?

I would like to hit the road with my own show but I think that due to the COVID situation I will have to wait for better times.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

Handicapped……lol, sorry!

I don’t wanna be different by anyone, I just want to play my music.

Who have you been listening to lately?

As I said, I’m fascinated by every kind of music.

At the moment I’m listening to new pop funk singers like Charlie Puth, Benee, The Weeknd, Daôy Freyr, Ole Borud, Jacob Collier, and many others.

Concerning jazz music, I’m listening to new bass players: Hadrien Feraud, Robert “Bubby” Lewis, Mono Neon.

Who are your biggest influences?

Alain Caron had a great influence on me but also John Patitucci, Jimmy Haslip, Adam Nitti, Pino Palladino, and many many others.

Tell us about your passions

I’m a professional musician, but also a scuba diving instructor.

I like to go underwater and when I dive my mind is free and the feeling is like to fly.

I love my girlfriend and this is another thing that makes me happy to wake up every day.

What else is happening next in your world?

I’m just living my life day by day.

I got a blood cancer six years ago, and i’m still in check, so I’m just trying to focus my attention to what really matters in life: me, my music, my family and my health.

Thanks for an awesome interview, Manuel Muzzu
