Delivering hard-hitting hip hop from her soul to yours, budding New Orleans icon Queen BlackKold Madina is making headlines again, this time with her brand new single “Bust it Wide Open” featured on her upcoming sophomore LP, Queens. The contributing filmmaker and star of the Academy award nominated documentary Trouble the Water, an influential, groundbreaking documentary on Hurricane Katrina, is back and rising to the top of the music scene, serving up an infectious blend of heavy duty beats and raw Hip-Hop rhymes.
Madina wrote, recorded and produced four original songs for the film, which would eventually be featured on her debut album of the same name. The title track “Trouble the Water” left a lasting impression of her rapping and writing prowess, receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song in a Film, while her collaboration with The Roots, “Amazing” is undoubtedly the heart of the movie.
Queen Madina (or Kimberly Rivers Roberts) and her husband Scott first erupted into entertainment headlines in 2008, as Trouble the Water was released to critical acclaim throughout film festivals, movie theaters, newspapers and magazines. Featuring footage taken by the couple around the Ninth Ward while they braved Katrina, the documentary bore witness to their acts of heroism and compassion, giving viewers a window into the true story behind the urban catastrophe which devastated much of the city.
Top-flight media outlets ranging from Time and The Source to The New York Times and Esquire took notice, including Peter Travers from Rolling Stone, who interviewed Madina during the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.
“Indelible portrait of New Orleans before, during and after Hurricane Katrina through the eyes of a force of nature named Kimberly Rivers Roberts…who raps her feelings in a voice that demands and deserves a record contract…A human face on a national tragedy. Superb in every department,” said Travers of Queen BKM.
After hitting the studio with a fresh clip of tracks and a new library of lyrics, Madina is prepared to unleash her latest creation, Queens, onto the unsuspecting ears of the world. Her upcoming single “Bust it Wide Open” will lead the charge on October 22, while the full record will hit stores on December 10. Plans are also underway for an accompanying music video and tour, while she continues to promote her homegrown Born Hustler record label.
Queen spoke about her new single, saying “This song was written with the intentions of shedding light on all Queen’s freedom to express themselves physically, emotionally, spiritually and sexually. Queens should know that it's ok to be who they are, to be sexually expressive without fearing the negative stereotype that society gives some women for being FREE.
As a Queen we can be sexually expressive and yet still stay grounded on our THRONE! I'm wanting to eradicate the idea that if Queens are sexually expressive that somehow ties them to some kind of negative sexual behavior, which IT DON'T. We are who we are – Queens - that aspect of a Queens personality needs to be respected!
This song is also an expression to men that if you are not handling your business right, YOU NEED TO TIGHTEN UP YOUR ACT!
Because some of us Queens are having these strong thoughts, desires and demands just as well as men do. As a song writer I felt the need to share this truth through a song.
ROCK YOUR OWN CROWN!”
