Zakiya's Debut Album, The Awakening

Zakiya is bridging the gap between young and old music lovers. Her album ranges from the big band sound, mixed with a hip hop bass to the upbeat tempo of pop. Having a strong love for music, Zakiya is open to trying new styles. Zakiya is preparing to release her debut album later this month, marking a huge step in the career of the multi-talented singer and songwriter. Under the guidance of Jelani Productions, Zakiya invented a new sound. Her jazzy appeal is compared to songstress Chrisette Michele mixed with a hip hop beat that is similar to Erykah Badu. Her melodic tones and youthful resonance are inconceivably beautiful.

“The Awakening” consists of twelve songs, each providing a piece of Zakiya’s artistic revelations. She tells the stories of many that are silent and also gives the listener time to dance and sing along. Zakiya’s album is a revolutionary piece of art, giving a different side of Zakiya’s ever evolving personality in each song. One of Zakiya’s favorite songs is “Hip Hop” featuring Ozy, a highly esteemed rapper from South Carolina who currently resides in California. The song “Hip Hop”, explains the beauty of the hip hop culture. Zakiya reveals her love for Hip Hop, “Hip-Hop is everything, the rhythm, the Struggle, the movement. Hip-Hop is you and me. I grew up listening to the Fugess, A Tribe called Quest, Tupac, and Biggie, so Hip Hop is something that I have always cherished.” The album unravels, from lyrical story telling songs like “sinful lips” to the big blues sound of “Suga Baby.”
