LOS ANGELES, CA – Art Rock Trio Principal Spinach Moving like Clockwork
Bursting at the seams with funky rhythms, catchy guitar riffs and jaw-dropping melodies, Principal Spinach is setting the table for an all-out West coast takeover campaign in 2013. While tirelessly supporting their sophomore effort Clockwork, the three-piece prog rock group is preparing to hit the studio again this summer to record iii, a double disc effort featuring new music, live cuts and B-sides. Bookended by West coast and US tour dates throughout the spring and fall; this hardworking trio is stepping out into the limelight to carve out their niche in the national music scene.
Founded in Los Angeles during 2010 by longtime bandmates Gaelon Davis (vocals, bass) and Luis Briones (drums, percussion) with the addition of Rod Castro (vocals, lead guitar), Principal Spinach was born. With a combined 40+ years in the industry, each member lends their own unique influences, experience and successes to the ingenious songwriting process, establishing the unique, unapologetic sound which defines the band. Their debut, Persistent Resistance was released in December 2010, quickly followed by supporting gigs at some of Southern California’s most iconic venues such as The Viper Room, The Roxy, Whiskey-a-Go-Go, House of Blues, The Key Club and many more.
In the meantime, Principal Spinach hit the studio again to record Clockwork at EMP Studios in Valley Village with owner and mixing engineer Lynne Earls. Following the record’s self-release in August 2012, the group kept their nose to the grindstone, hitting the road while setting up meetings with area managers and labels to take the next step in their career.
While drawing comparisons to Incubus, Primus, Radiohead, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Mr. Bungle and others, seeds of media attention began to sprout and grow.
“Principal Spinach has some serious chops, and they’re not afraid to show them off, they’re also not afraid to offend, said Mike Folker of Secret Song Records.
As the genre-defying three-headed monster continues to mature and evolve, the inevitable release and triumph of their next effort, iii will allow Davis, Briones and Castro to delve even deeper into their risky, adventurous and oft-aggressive songwriting formula. Tour dates in April and May sees Principal Spinach descending on West coast cities from San Diego and Venice to Portland and Seattle, while a full US tour is planned for the fall and winter seasons.
Clockwork is currently available through iTunes and other digital retailers, with streaming music on Principal Spinach’s Bandcamp site as well as internet radio stations around the world. Check out their Facebook or Twitter pages for tour details, updates on their third album or videos and catch the band live at the Roxy on Saturday, May 4th at 9pm.
