Am 88 year-old composer (as of 7/20) who tried over forty years ago to write popular hits. Following careers in education, and older worker federal employment programs, I turned back to music, but this time, I responded to that inner voice which lead me to classical music. For my CD, I had themes from my popular music orchestrated, but I wrote only classical music from then on. A few months ago, I had an MP3 album of my stringquartets released, and in 2017, I released CD of that album.
Art, as far as creativity is concerned, is an organic process in which the artist’s ability, at any given point, corresponds directly to his ability to experience, and then assimilate all that he would present to the world as art. Therefore, if an artist’s perception, internalization, and reconciliation are honestly represented in his work, his art will be authentic. True music, then, is reflective of the artist himself, or represents the artist’s perception of all he has experienced.
David Solomon’s constant companion is music, a loyal friend that has accompanied him through the highs and lows of a life that spans almost nine decades. Singing was his first love. He sang semi-professionally as an operatic baritone for eight years in the NYC area, following four years of vocal study with Maestro Luigi Dell’Orefice, who gave him opportunity to sing in several operas, beginning in 1960. The first opera was “Madame Butterfly”. Maestro Dell’Orefice conducted musicians from the Metropolitan Opera.
His first attempts at writing popular hits was not successful, for he could write only melodies, although he paid professionals to add harmony to his melodies. Relocating to Connecticut in 1981, he entered college, and completed a BS degree in 1986, and an MS, in 1988.
After retiring at age 75, he began writing classical pieces: the first one was Encore, the featured piece of his Encore Trilogy. He released his first CD, Music of David Solomon: Orchestrated by Christopher Wilson, in 2012, and his last CD, String Quartets of David Solomon, was released in 2016 as an MP3 album, followed by a CD in 2017. His music is available on Amazon, iTunes and CDBaby, and is regularly heard on Jango Radio and YouTube.
