Artist Interview: WES
Tell us about yourself and your music
I’m WES, an artist out of Alabama, and I produce entertaining music that consists of a hybrid of different genres of music. I grew up to all types of music ranging from blues to hip hop to country to pop, so I use all those influences to build my work. A bulk of my work is hip hop, but I have written music for many mainstream genres. Most of the music I create is “Qlimate” music, which is music deriving from the “temperature” you are feeling at that particular time. If you’re feeling blues, then write blues, feeling rap, then write rap, feeling pop, then write pop, and so on. It’s your creation, do what you want with it.
Talk to us more about your latest release
My latest release is “It’s All Good”. It is a feel good hip-hop song that I wrote thinking about all the crazy experiences I have had or witnessed in my hometown.
What inspired you to write this release?
I’m from a very small town, so we are all about sticking together. The chorus in this song was all about just being there for your people. No matter where you are, no matter what you do, and no matter what you need, a real community is there for you in good times and bad. So, I decided to tell the story of all the good, bad, and ugly experiences that often go on in a neighborhood.
Any plans to release a video?
I plan to release a video, but this video has to capture every movie-like moment described in the song all at once (seemingly), so it is has been a challenge finding the right visual production group to convey everything like I want it. However, there are some great film groups out there that I know can pull this off. I just have to keep an open mind.
Any plans to hit the road?
I have plans to hit the road, but I have been working hard in the studio creating material to fill out road shows while still having a variety of songs to perform. However, I am always open to do a show.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
I try to brand myself as an artist with a totally different style approach to music. I do not like being labeled to have to do one set genre of music. So when someone wants me on one style of track, I try to produce something with a hybrid feel to reach a larger audience. Everyone wants good music, so you do not have to limit yourself on a track.
Who have you been listening to lately?
I have been listening to a lot of new wave music with a mix of hip-hop, R&B, and pop. Just trying to get a feeling of where music is headed these days. It’s all over the place.
Tell us about your passions
The need to accomplish all of my goals. There is so much in life that I want to do, and knowing that this life will be over soon is all the motivation I need to get up and go get it (GUAGGI). So, I have to make each day count and try to be productive.
What else is happening next in your world?
Only God knows the answer to that, and I know whatever he has in store is going to be great because I believe that he has a place for me out there to do great things and make great people feel good through my music.
Thanks for an awesome interview, Wesley!
