Artist Interview: Say J
Tell us about yourself and your music
Well, I started making music at the age of 14. I’ve worked with a few big names from my childhood including Andre Nickatina, Afroman, etc. I’ve taught myself everything from music production to photography and visual production. I pull most of my influence on my music from 90’s era hip-hop and 60’s-70’s disco era. I’m kind of a jack of all traits if you would. A motorcycle mechanic, to a business owner, I like to keep my brain learning. I find inspiration from everyday life, and try to make music people can relate to.
What inspired you to write this release?
I got the inspiration for this song from a recent break up with my ex-fiancé. It was a hard time in my life so I thought a song focused on happiness and a good time would help get me out of my funk. It did just that and brought back my motivation to keep making music!
Any plans to release a video?
YES! My best video to date, filmed and storyboarded by Mogel Minded Productions. it will be releasing April 26th!
Any plans to hit the road?
As of now, no plans to hit the road. Life has its way of working out, and at the moment I am dedicated to being the best father I can to my two beautiful daughters, ages 2 and 3. So if the time comes and it calls for it, I will hit the road. But as of now, my daughters are my main focus.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
I try to find my own lane. My Music isn’t like any other music that’s being released at the moment. From Video style to lyrics and delivery, I’ve made it my own. Along with a clothing company Bossta Nation, Its been a long road but pretty fruitful!
Who have you been listening to lately?
I’ve been listening to a lot of old-school rap lately, Warren G, Nate Dogg, Snoop, Pac. It has just really been hitting the vibes I’ve been looking for!
Tell us about your passions
My kids first and foremost! Then my love for what I do, I own a custom print shop and being my own boss really makes it easier to get out of bed and motivate myself to make today better than yesterday.
What else is happening next in your world?
After the single drops, I have a new album dropping shortly after! It’s been a long time coming for this album but like I said I’m a perfectionist. I keep going back and tweaking but we are finally in the final stages of it all! Watch for that to hit iTunes in the next month or two!
Thanks for an awesome interview, Josh!
