Artist Interview: Rage
Tell us about yourself and your music
My name is Franklin A. Simpkins aka Rage I’m from the south suburbs of Chicago and I’m a rapper/producer. I write and produce all of my music and have been doing so since I was 14. I love all genres of music and pull from each one to craft my own personal style and flow.
Talk to us more about your latest release
My latest release is called Working it’s an 11 track EP explaining my journey through this past year. It starts off on a high note like a great introduction track to a movie. It moves to a more low somber tone to craft the first scene of this movie. Throughout the project the music and production progresses to a more confident state of mind. I view this project as the soundtrack to my 2016. You can find it on audiomack.com.
What inspired you to write this release?
My 2016 was total BS to be honest with you I really went through it. I experienced heart break, loss, and plenty of disappointment. I got so depressed I almost gave up on the music and took my life numerous times. I finally regained my footing towards the end of year and got my mind right enough to write this project. I wrote the entire project in a week and had over 20 songs originally recorded. After a lot of thinking and planning I narrowed it down to my 11 best tracks.
Any plans to release a video?
I have released a few music videos and they all done very well I average over 600 views a video. I post my videos on facebook because I can share them easily on there.
Any plans to hit the road?
I do plan to hit the road eventually I’m just busy making a name for myself on the internet. Trying to build more of a brand and put my name out there more. Me and my group 365 don’t have no label backing us we have eachother and we are pushing eachother to successs.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
I literally speak from where my head is at I tell my true story and sugar coat nothing. Who you get on the track is who you get in real life I’m me 24/7. I’m also very lyrical I’m a word smith I break down words to the mere syllables and find different ways to use and rhyme them. I also pull from different sounds in my best select. I combine 90s boom bap with trap with rock with blues with folk with funk. I try to pull the best qualities of each and create something never been done before.
Who have you been listening to lately?
I listen to Kendrick Lamar and J.Cole heavily. I love Untitled Unmastered and For Your Eyez Only best albums of 2016. I also listen to my group mates a lot too such as Magnanimous, LSD, and EnerGy. Jay IDK, Joey Badass, Chance the Rapper, Mick Jankins, Montana 300, Gucci Mane, Supa Bwe and many others get heavy rotation as well.
Tell us about your passions
My people are the reason I get out of the bed in the morning. I do this music and everything as a means to spread the truth to my people and giving them the knowledge they need to combat this oppressive system. When I say my people I don’t just mean my melinated brothers and sisters but all human Vienna that feel disenfranchised and disregarded by society.
What else is happening next in your world?
Just living life to the fullest and leading by example with the music and everything else. You know really making sure people know that anything and everything is possible.
Thanks for an awesome interview, Franklin!
