Artist Interview: Phenom
Tell us about yourself and your music
Bronx, New York-born I was endowed with an innate talent and yet an even greater gift for pouring out the hard work necessary, I’m building my own Hip-Hop empire, crafting and creating my own music while helping to promote and produce that of other up and coming artists along the way. I dropped out of school in the eighth grade where I soon discovered the joys of music. I first started making music at age 13. My older sister was dating a producer who taught me how to produce beats. After a while of making beats, I started to produce songs for some local artists and by age 16, I was writing songs for other artists as well as for myself. Inspired by the work of artists like Nas, Jay-Z, and the legendary Michael Jackson, my work quickly gained steam, finding myself release my first EP, Feeling Like a Champion, in 2011 which boasted popular hits like “Local Celebrity,” featuring DeX! and “My Better Half” which had me teaming with Jovanna. The accolades continued to come, drawing comparisons to artists such as Fabolous, Drake, and Jay-Z, while applauding the unique voice in my work. With my commercial, radio-ready sounds on the move, it was time for me to roll out the second phase of my master plan, launching my own entertainment company, So Phenomenal Entertainment, at the age of 21. That transition had me not only working on my own music but wearing an array of hats, taking on duties as executive producer, audio engineer, songwriter, manager, and head of artist development.
Talk to us more about your latest release
My latest release is the first single, “Masterpiece” featuring Seda, which is off of my upcoming “Ethos” EP. “Masterpiece” was produced by Netherlands producer, Ray Denz. The song has a smooth R&B vibe with some Hip Hop edginess.
What inspired you to write this release?
In my eyes, a woman is like a piece of art… a masterpiece. Every woman isn’t the same just like art. Sometimes their flaws can make them worth more. Every woman is unique like a piece of art.
Any plans to release a video?
Yes. We are currently putting together a video treatment. The video should be out by the summer.
Any plans to hit the road?
As of right now I’ll be performing the following dates in NYC:
February 12th, 2017 – At The Mockingbird at 7pm (25 Avenue B, New York, NY)
February 23rd, 2017 – At Brooklyn Exposure at 8pm (1401 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, NY)
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
I always stay true to my character in my music. I don’t put on a facade to sell records. My music is very commercial but very lyrical at the same time if you really listen to it.
Who have you been listening to lately?
Lately, I’ve been listening to a lot of J. Cole and Fabolous. I love their flow and wordplay.
Tell us about your passions
Besides music, I love to work with my hands and to travel. I spent a few years working as a general contractor and renovated homes and even recording studios.
Thanks for an awesome interview, Jason!
