Artist Interview: New Soul Authority
Tell us about yourself and your music
I’ve always had a strong emotional connection to music. The effect I’ve felt from listening and playing music is so deep, it’s very difficult to describe. But it is meaningful to me in that it takes me away, stimulates strong feelings, and ultimately creates a way to communicate between the artist and listener. When I realized that my music also had this effect on others…well that was the beginning of me realizing that passion I felt for creating music.
Talk to us more about your latest release
I have not had a release since 2013, which was a recording of one of my live shows. The album was called ‘Picking Petals.’ The biggest song from that release was a bluesy tune called ‘Getting Fancy.’ However, I’ve been in the studio for about the past year or so working on a RnB/pop project. I’m very excited about this new music and plan on starting to release singles starting later this summer.
What inspired you to write this release?
This was a song that I wrote for my wife…though the details I can’t really share, I think people will get the point if they listen to the lyrics.
Any plans to release a video?
Not currently, but at some point…yes.
Any plans to hit the road?
Until I’ve completed this current project, I’m going to stay pretty local. But once this project is completed I will plan some touring to help promote the music.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
This is a challenge, for sure. People tell me all the time that my music offers something different…new…refreshing. But how do we brand that. I try to defy categorization…but I think the music, and hopefully the response, comes first…and then the branding follow. This new music that I’m creating is hip, chill, soulful, deep, & meaningful, and allows me to connect to listeners on a deeper level.
Who have you been listening to lately?
I listen to so many different styles and artists…from Bach and Vivaldi, to Monk and Robert Johnson, to Herbie Hancock, to Cat Stevens, to Prince and Joss Stone, to Zero 7 and The Brand New Heavies, to The Weekend and Justin Timberlake…and many more.
Tell us about your passions
Tennis, hiking, bike touring, cooking
What else is happening next in your world?
Hopefully a lot more music and meeting people along the road.
Thanks for an awesome interview, Saul!
