Tell us about yourself and your music
My name is Efosa Kevin Okezie (My last name is going to change soon)
You can just call me Kevin or by my artist name
My Artist name is Mr. King
I currently have 2 projects I’ve created. My 1st project (The King & I) was an experiment project to see my skills in making music. That’s why the quality of the project is not the best but i have room for learning and getting better. My second project (The Renaissance) has a bit of better quality in the music production but i still have room to learn and get better.
Talk to us more about your latest release
The Renaissance is a French and Italian inspired project I created that has to do with: Religion, Creativity, and my cultural background. As a kid, i had a childhood growing up in Italy, so in response to heading back to Italy for my vacation this summer of 2017, i decided to release the project the same year.
What inspired you to write this release?
What really inspired me to write the release was because of my excitement of heading back to my childhood days, and the cultural background it had to me. The Renaissance was the event of the arts and creating and that is what inspired me for that topic.
Any plans to release a video?
I do actually have plans to make a music video for either the song Donatello or The Last Supper (Extended Version) but at this time it is just a plan because i don’t really have much support and need time for it.
Any plans to hit the road?
I was planning this year to have a tour named after the release called The Renaissance Tour, but I’ve decided to postpone it to maybe next year where i have more time and money and hopefully a little bit of support from my family because they are the ones keeping me from doing any of this and i want to show them my ability to make it and what i can do to achieve that
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
I would say the diverse genre throughout my music, and even though the default genre is hip hop, i use a wide range of mix with other genres within my project. The big thing i would say that makes me stand out is making music for the creativity vs. making music for the money. For me, i make the music for my own liking and i aspire to put all of my work into creating amazing music for creativity, and of course making the money aspect is also considered. Nowadays there are a lot of music being made mostly for just the money and revenue with the lack of actual creativity. Other than mainstream, there are those stand out artist that also don’t get much recognition because they try to be different.
Who have you been listening to lately?
The people I’ve been listening to are pretty much my big influences for my music creativity. I listen to a lot of Kid Cudi and Kanye West for inspiration, but there are many other artists that give me taste in how i make my music
Tell us about your passions
Other than music, I’ve always had a huge passion for movies, directing, making videos and fan made trailers. I even make music for the videos i make. I also have a little bit of passion as an actor because I love to act as a whole other person, and i was told i am very funny and an upbeat character. I am pretty much a man of the arts.
What else is happening next in your world?
I am now planning on 3 projects in the future, but not all at the same time so i don’t have all that work clustered, so the next project I’ll be working on will be the trilogy of my past projects I’ve made. I am also planning on music videos for my current release of The Renaissance and have a tour for that planned as well.
Thanks for an awesome interview, Kevin!
