Artist Interview: Moonstruck

Artist Interview: Moonstruck

Tell us about yourself and your music

I remember my music production began when I was in 6th grade. I would experiment with garageband for hours a day and looking back my music was really bad, but I kept at it. I’ve moved on to creating EDM, future bass, trap, trance, and everything in between. I really wanted to try my hand at any sub genre of EDM and see what clicked with me. I remember creating a trap song titled Get On My Level which had some preset loops and some altered hi0hats and things that I sampled and I performed a “mini set” at my sophomore high school dance back in 2013 and the feeling you get when people tell you your music is good and worth listening to really drove me to pursue it more seriously.

Talk to us more about your latest release

I just recently released a EP with 5 songs on it called MT STONER. With my favorite song in the EP being a year old song I made for my senior year final in music class. After I made that song, Quartz, I decided I’d release an EP featuring more mellow and trance songs. I was just recently able to get this EP played on Pandora radio stations under my stage name Moonstruck which blew my mind. It was a great feeling of confirmation in what I’ve been doing.

What inspired you to write this release?

I’ve always understood the amount of hype around an artist like Martin Garrix or Tiesto and I love their music, but when I’m just sitting in my room on my own and contemplating all the problems in my life it’s always been the more mellow songs that I could really lose my self in and just forget about everything else. Flume, one of my favorite artists since 2013, had a really big influence on my chill step songs because his style was so unique and I found myself enjoying tat rather than the other EDM at the time.

Any plans to release a video?

I’ve always had plans to make a really awesome and impact music video, but sadly I have none right now. I’m actually working on a new song right now that is on the verge of being completed, I’m just working out the vocals and I can invasion a fantastic music video for this song and I have a friend in cinematography that i want to work with me on a video.

Any plans to hit the road?

Sadly school takes up plenty of my time, but at the school I attend, Oshkosh University, I play some house parties and I was asked by Summer fest to submit a press-kit which I will be sending shortly so hopefully you can catch me in Milwaukee later this summer.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

I try to steer clear from paying websites to do it for me because I’ve had to freeze my accounts and things like that because I was trapped and wasn’t able to back out of my advertising contract. Besides that, I go by word of mouth, sound cloud, youtube, twitter, Facebook, and by truing to get featured in the local news paper and things like that, which I have found out is surprisingly more effective than you’d think.

Who have you been listening to lately?

Being from Milwaukee, I listen to local rapper Ishdarr and I have sent him some rap beats I’ve produced. But in terms of EDM, I’ve been listening to Flume, Porter Robinson, Martin Garrix, Adventure Club, Space Jesus, and KSHMR.

Tell us about your passions

I like to workout and surprisingly I want to go to school, crazy right? But in all seriousness, I want to be successful in school and it’s definitely something that takes up a lot of my time.

Thanks for an awesome interview, Sam!
