Artist Interview: Michael Egleton

Tell us about yourself and your music

Johnny Gill, Bobby “Blue” Bland, George Benson, Michael Henderson, Donny Hathaway are just a few of the names that come to mind when you hear the music of Michael Egleton. Whether you’re in the mood to dance or for love the R & B, jazzy and sultry blends of piano and orchestra sounds sprinkled with raspy vocals takes you there with every song.
Today his keyboard is how he interprets life and allows his feelings to flow from the heart. Egleton’s mature sound can be attributed to his childhood and being raised by his grandfather, a fiery Gospel preacher from the south and former ” Honkie Tonk” musician himself during the 30’s and 40’s playing in the juke joints around Chicago.
This fresh, new sound with an old flare and innovative techniques and style best describes Michael Egleton and his music. It is simple yet mature, nothing too complicated, a straight to the point sound that’s refreshing to today’s music. Many of Michael’s musical influences include legendary Stevie Wonder, The Clark Sisters, George Duke, Michael Henderson, George Haynes of St. Louis and Barry White to name a few.
Originally from Barberton, Ohio, Michael currently resides in Akron, Ohio. Akron is well-known for producing several artists, Egleton aspires to add his name to that list one day. Talk to us more about your latest release

My latest release, That’s Alright “The Rewind”, for now is a 3 song LP with the Bonus track, Behind These Walls feat the amazing saxophonist, Bob Esterle. Bob’s latest career highlight was the opportunity to play with the world famous Temptations! This should speak to his talents on sax. It was this level of producers, musicians and singers that worked on this independent project. All 3 songs were great with the aforementioned joint receiving critical acclaim. This independent project was produced by Wes McCraw, Creekside Audio, Norton, OH and Samuel Haygood, N-DA-Groove Productions, Atlanta, GA. They put their best forward. Pop “Rewound” is a Smooth Jazz instrumental that has played on radio stations around the world. Then there is the dance joint, Stank “Wound Up”. Built for hand and line dancing, this upbeat tune will get you started right away. The last song, Behind These Walls feat Bob Esterle, well let’s put it in the words of Mr. Terry McGill a bonafide star maker at TAM Music Los Angeles, CA and who has worked with anybody who is somebody in the music industry, from Michael Jackson to most of today’s stars. He said, “…. Great song! The lead vocals are strong and forceful. The background vocals harmonies are tight and on key…. This song puts me in the mind of some Lou Rawls, Teddy Pendergrass, DJ Rogers, The Dells, Lenny Williams… Over all this is Good Records.” As you see this independent project speaks!

What inspired you to write this release?

My inspiration for any music that I may write is life! My life experiences. The good times. The bad times. The times of loss. The times of happiness and gain. Tender times. Loving times. Touching times. Emotional times. Real life and living. The way I see life through my eyes. Whether it’s social issues or just trying to make it in the concrete jungle. Black, brown, white, the struggle knows no color.

Any plans to release a video?

There are a few ideas being floated for videos. Being an independent solo artist, all costs and expenses come out of my pockets. I given all to my music and my belief in it. When I say “ALL”, I mean everything I have to give. So things are going at the pace of my pocket which determines the time line and schedule. No big label behind this. There many things on the table though so you go to keep watch at my web site, WWW.MICHAELEGLETON.COM.

Any plans to hit the road?

I’m working now Indie On the Move to develop a 10 market tour. This will be my first tour ever! I don’t have to mention how excited I am to get to meet personally those who listen to my music and support my talent. As soon as we have finalized things a schedule will be posted everywhere.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

Well I leave my Branding duties are left to the award winning Branding firm, Blue-Artists. I’ve been with them 3 years and they have done a great job. They B.E.T. Nominated and has one many other awards. The C.E.O., who I affectionately call, “Boss” has been right on tarket with every move. They have brought me along slowly. They too work hand in hand with the music producers and think alike. They are like family to me. Actual family. The whole team is like family. I also work with Ms Kim Giles of Talentear. Shes my connection to the industry and has vast experience working with artists like the great Jazz saxophonist, Walter Beasley. Shes also worked in radio in many other positions up and down the east coast. Then there is Ms Michelle Magee at Bullzeye Entertainment and the wise counsel of my friend and brother, Mr Shahiem Kellum at C&C Entertainment. So as you see, I have been Blessed with favor from many people and sources of which I don’t take for granted. I wouldn’t trade my team for anything.

Who have you been listening to lately?

Lately I’ve been listening to not only my past favorites like Stevie Wonder, alot of one of my favorites and who many say I play and sound like, the late, great Mr Donny Hathaway, Layla Hathaway, and other artists of the past like Barry White, Curtis Mayfild, Isaac Hayes, Sly Stone, Charlie Wilson then there are new artists I like Bruno Mars, Tyrese, and other Soul singers of today, Musiq Soul Child, D’Angelo and other music in this vien.

What else is happening next in your world?

The next thing coming up is my brand new independent project, In The Q. I’m in the studio now hoping to have it out by mid year. There are 5 songs in the hopper now for producer. It’s going to be some of my best work to date. Go here, listen to the 2017 preview clip of Let’s Dance and judge for yourself! Leave a comment and let me know what you think!

Thanks for an awesome interview, Michael!
